Los Angeles Universal Preschool Director of Fund Development


The Director of Fund Development is responsible for the comprehensive fund development plan by coordinating and assuring the implementation of strategies to build sustainable sources of revenue; and to gain support from targeted constituencies and the general public. This position will also supervise a staff of three.
Essential Functions:
Service Goal:
Consistently promotes and models courteous LAUP/community service in a prompt and efficient manner. Maintains positive relationships with all LAUP internal and external contacts through professional honest interaction. Responds to requests quickly and professionally recognizing that a request serves an organization and/or community need.

Supports LAUP mission of providing high-quality preschool education to the children of Los Angeles County. Dedicated to the preschool cause (DREAM BIG), and along with LAUP team, upholds the organization to the highest standards.
Daily Tasks:
  • Works with the Board in developing and achieving annual and long range financial goals through the creation and support of fundraising programs.
  • Directs development activities and supervise development staff.
  • Identifies, cultivates and solicits gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations, the public sector, and other sources that will provide a network of resources for LAUP. Responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing all fundraising campaigns, major giving, planned giving, foundation relations and special events funding.
  • Develops, coordinates, and implements strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors and prospects (current and planned gifts).
  • Manages and coordinates robust government funding revenue stream from federal, state and local sources.
  • Develops, manages and staffs fundraising committees of the LAUP Board or other volunteers to achieve successful fundraising goals.
  • Oversees the daily operations of the department including donor research, gift processing, donor data base maintenance, and department budget.
  • Develops, implements, and reports on the annual and long term fundraising plan with dollar goals, objectives, and strategies for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major individual gifts, foundation grants and corporate gifts in conjunction with Senior VP of External Affairs and the Finance & Development Committee.
  • Coordinates public funding solicitations with the Director of Public Affairs to ensure overall fundraising goals and targets are being met.
  • Responsible for all organizational fundraising communications, including messages delivered through programmatic means.
  • Collaborates with Senior VP and other Development team members to develop fundraising ideas.
Physical Duties
  • Office work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required. May be expected to lift boxes up to 20 lbs. Must be able to travel domestically as required.

Knowledge and Skills Requirements:
  • Ability to design, direct, and implement a coordinated Development Plan.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively work with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Effective networking and relationship building skills to interface with all levels of internal staff, as well as external levels such as board members and stakeholders.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
  • Ability to lead and motivate groups and individuals.
  • Ability to organize and direct a range of fundraising events, meetings and the publicity that accompanies them.
  • Exceptional organizational and administrative skills. Must have the ability to think strategically, plan, set goals and objectives, and follow through.
  • Extensive knowledge of all funding avenues, including, but not limited to, foundations, corporate sponsorship, annual giving, major donors, public funding and earned income strategies.
Business and Computer Skills:
  • Experience with Raiser's Edge and/or other development software; verifiable competent data base management experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of business vocabulary and composition of business documents. Ability to learn and apply routine office policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • A strong network of local development contacts and resources is desirable.
Preferred Level of Experience:
5+ years experience in successful fundraising within the non-profit industry.
Formal Education:
A Bachelor's degree is required. A Master's degree in a related field is preferred. Participation in the Association of Fundraising Professionals is highly desired.
Other Requirements:
Must have a valid California Driver License and proof of LAUP required level of automobile insurance.
