Human Rights Watch (“HRW’)is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Director of Development and Outreach in Northern California. The Director will oversee the 80-member California Committee North, as well as the San Francisco office; help grow philanthropic support for the organization by cultivating and directly soliciting major gift contributions; manage HRW's expanding San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley constituency; and promote HRW's domestic and international advocacy initiatives to local audiences.  This position will report to the Managing Director of Development and Outreach based in New York.

 Responsibilities:

1. Building financial support for the organization by soliciting major gifts and general support funds from supporters throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley;

2. Researching, identifying, cultivating, servicing and soliciting new prospects, existing donors, and California Committee North members;

3. Servicing HRW International Board members located in Northern California;

4. Overseeing the California Committee North Executive, Dinner and Advocacy Committees and other outreach initiatives in San Francisco, including Committee meetings, researcher briefings, advocacy events, and cultivation events;

5. Overseeing the production of fundraising, outreach and cultivation events in Northern California, including HRW's annual Voices for Justice dinners in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, million dollar fundraisers;

6. Communicating the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters;

7. Creating and tracking donor lists, fundraising, and expenses;

8. Working with programmatic staff to design and implement San Francisco press and advocacy strategies in order to promote HRW's goals;

9. Supervise local staff in the San Francisco office;

10. Expanding fundraising outreach to the Northwest region of the United States; and

11. Other tasks as may be required.

Qualifications:

Education: Abachelor’s degree is required.

Experience:Minimum of seven years of fundraising experience is preferred.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Proven success in creating and managing major gifts programs and highly skilled at managing high-level donor relationships.

2. Demonstrated experience overseeing large fundraising events, such as the annual dinner, as well as smaller house parties.

3. Familiarity with fundraising in Northern California is strongly preferred.

4. An entrepreneurial and disciplined self-starter who can work independently, but also function as a member of a development team.

5. Strong oral and written communications skills in English.

6. Proven ability to present issues to the media and policymakers is highly desirable.

7. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW.
