Economic Researcher

With profound research and advice, Profundo aims to make a practical contribution to sustainability and social justice. Quality comes first to meet the goals of our clients. Thematically we focus on international commodity chains, the financial sector and Corporate Social Responsibility. Our international client base includes non-governmental organizations, research institutes and government institutions, as well as pension funds and other investors.
To expand our research capacity we are looking for an experienced
Economic researcher
You will research the activities of companies involved in international commodity chains (mining, agriculture, fisheries, forestry, energy) and other sectors with significant social and environmental impacts (garments, weapons, electricity, etc.). Using data retrieved from company publications, company registers, trade journals, market studies, government and industry statistics, financial and corporate databases and other sources you will identify the key players within an industry, to research their investment strategies and their supply relationships.
Investment strategy research aims to understand the capital expenditure patterns: the choices made with regard to production technologies (e.g. renewable vs. coal-fired power), geographical allocation and vertical integration. Also, the funding strategies pursued and financial institutions involved in funding companies’ investment plans are analysed.
Supply chain research aims to identify the crucial trade relationships between companies and to analyse the distribution of added value and other benefits, as well as (external) costs, along international supply chains. By understanding how corporate groups are structured internationally, you will also unravel transfer pricing and tax avoidance schemes.
Building on the data collected and analysed as described, you will also work on scenario studies to assess the financial implications which sustainability risks and policy changes could have for companies. These will help banks and investors to understand the financial and sustainability risks they are exposed to, as well as the options they have to influence companies.
You can develop similar model studies to assess the effectiveness of policy instruments which market players and governments could use to make commodity chains more sustainable. This research will help NGOs and governments to understand how to engage with companies to further corporate social responsibility.
We expect you to:
• have a Master’s or PhD degree in an economic field;
• be a passionate researcher with keen analytical skills and at least 5 years of experience;
• know how to analyse corporate structures, investment strategies, trade relationships and tax avoidance schemes;
