ADVOCACY AND CAMPAIGNS MANAGER

ONE is a campaign and advocacy organization backed by over three and a half million people from around the world and every walk of life who are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. We hold world leaders to account for the promises made to the poorest, and we press them to put in place policies to promote and support development. We also work with leaders in Africa to support greater democracy, accountability and transparency. ONE operates from Berlin, Brussels, Johannesburg, London, Paris and Washington DC.
We are looking for an Advocacy & Campaigns Manager to support our advocacy, policy and campaigning efforts in Australia, Italy and Sweden – priority countries which ONE has identified for 2014, and in which ONE does not have a permanent presence. This is a new role within ONE and is an exciting opportunity to work on a varied portfolio to help achieve ONE’s advocacy objectives in Sweden (a key development champion in an election year), Italy (a G8 country which will host the Presidency of the EU in late 2014) and Australia (hosts of the G20 this year).   The Advocacy & Campaigns Manager will also provide general support to ONE’s policy, advocacy, campaigning and media outreach in Brussels.  This is a permanent position and focus countries may change in future years as policy priorities of the organisation develop.
The ideal candidate will be a great team player who is sympathetic to ONE’s issues and is able to handle a varied and fast paced role. Familiarity and understanding of two or more of the Italian, Australian and Swedish political systems, an understanding of international development issues and interest or experience in Africa are strongly preferred. 
Reports To: International Advocacy Director.
Location:  Brussels or London. Regular international travel will be required.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manage ONE’s advocacy, campaigning and policy work in our priority countries (currently Australia, Sweden and Italy), working closely with the International Advocacy Director to develop and execute the strategy for engagement in these countries.
  • Keep up with the political and policy debates on general issues and development matters in our priority countries and provide relevant teams across the organisation with regular updates and guidance for further activities.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with political contacts and other key partners in our priority countries.
  • Draft briefings, talking points and other materials for the use of senior ONE staff and principals and for colleagues working on the relevant projects; Read and digest relevant policy reports and other documents and produce time-sensitive briefings; prepare blog posts for the ONE website
  • Work closely with campaigns, marketing and media staff across the organisation, in the development of campaigning, creative and media materials and products
  • Work with relevant teams across the organisation, to ensure efficient communication, early alerts and coordinated work and to ensure advocacy guidance from all priority countries is fed to relevant colleagues;
  • Provide project coordination support to various project teams across the organisation with the delivery of related projects as required; for 2014 this includes project teams working on the European Elections and the pan-European Youth Ambassadors membership programme
  • Provide logistical support for the execution of ONE strategies in our priority countries as required
  • Any other duties as required by the role
     
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
  • At least 3 years of working in an advocacy, campaigning or communications role, ideally within the international development sector, preferably in a one of our priority countries – Australia, Italy or Sweden.
  • Experience of communicating development issues and complex legislative processes for a range of stakeholders, including lobby targets and members of the public.
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills and strong quantitative skills
  • Proven ability to synthesize complex documents with an eye for key points and relevance to ONE’s issues.
  • Very good project management skills; a proactive attitude with the ability to drive projects in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and occasional heavy workloads.
  • Well-organized and able to deal confidently with all types of inquiries.
  • Proven ability to multi-task; ability to work to tight deadlines and produce work with sometimes very short notice.
  • Flexible, resourceful and innovative Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Familiarity and understanding of political and policy debates in Australia, Italy and Sweden.
  • Familiarity and understanding of international development issues and interest or experience in Africa strongly preferred.
  • A relevant academic qualification
  • A commitment to ONE’s aims.
  • Proficiency in English, both verbal and written, is essential to the role; some understanding of Italian or Swedish would be an advantage.
