Junior Accountant - Guatemala
The Need
International Justice Mission is seeking a skilled Cashier with a passion for justice, a servant’s heart, and a desire to use his or her abilities to support IJM Guatemala’s work on behalf of child victims of sexual violence. The successful candidate will be an honest and forthright person and possess strong language skills in both English and Spanish. The Cashier will manage the field office’s daily cash flow, provide general finance-related service to office personnel, and support the Finance Team in ensuring that the entire office meets IJM’s high standards of financial responsibility and stewardship. This position is based in Guatemala City, Guatemala, is open to Guatemalan nationals, and reports to the Director of Finance, Guatemala.
Responsibilities
- Administer petty cash and maintain the petty cash ledger as the Petty Cash Custodian, ensuring that all cash transactions are conducted in accordance with IJM’s financial accounting manual and policies;
- Count the cash to ensure all transactions have been accounted for;
- Coordinate the replenishment of petty cash as needed;
- Provide cash advances to employees as required, using authorized PRFs;
- Review financial coding and supporting documentation for compliance with IJM’s financial accounting manual and policies before settling cash advances or issuing expense payments;
- Prepare checks for payments to vendors or employees;
- Prepare PRFs and other forms for transfers of payroll, SAT and other payments;
- Make copies of all accounting documents in the Monthly Finance Reporting Requirements to be sent to HQ;
- Maintain current accounting form templates, per diem rates, mileage rates, exchange rates and others as established in the accounting manual and authorized by the FOD and the HQ Finance Department;
- Keep the inventory lists updated and send a copy to HQ and, where applicable, make sure that each asset has the corresponding tag code for accounting and IT;
- Make sure IJM Guatemala meets all payment requirements for IGSS and SAT;
- File all documents monthly and keep the originals of IGSS and SAT payments in specific folders in case they become subject to a government audit;
- File original bank statements and checks attached to each PRF;
- Assemble required accounting information for auditors during audits;
- Send original documents to local external accountant for registration;
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Accountant or Director of Finance; and
- Provide effective, timely and responsive support and service to field office personnel.
Required Skills and Experience
- High-level proficiency in English (both written and spoken), including accounting and business terminology. Fluency in Spanish;
- Bachelors degree in Accounting and registration as Public Accountant at the Colegio de Contadores Publicos y Auditores de Guatemala;
- At least one year of accounting experience;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office;
- Experience in Quickbooks or other online accounting systems strongly desired;
- NGO work experience a plus but not required;
- Ability to manage and keep control of cash in compliance with all Finance policies;
- Strong organizational skills; and
- Excellent interpersonal relational skills combined with a positive attitude.
