Economist/ Policy Manager, System Operation Performance

This role will focus on our work in the wholesale energy market, monitoring the performance of electricity and gas operators, designing and setting incentives that encourage and reward economic and efficient practices within the sector.  It’s a complex and challenging area of work that offers excellent opportunities for professional development and the potential for your analysis to influence key decisions relating to energy sector policy and regulation.
You’ll undertake detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis to evaluate operators’ performance within the energy market and ensure that this work informs policy development and the creation of effective incentives to deliver a better outcome for energy consumers.  You’ll forge excellent relationships with energy system operators and other key stakeholders within the energy sector. Your strong communication skills will be key in encouraging a transparent and open partnership, and supporting the production of a range of publications, guidelines and policy materials.
Essential qualifications:
  • 2:1 degree or better in economics, engineering or other relevant analytical subject
Essential skills:
  • Strong analytical skills which you are able to apply to real-world problems to help understand policy implications
  • Experience of building constructive and productive relationships with colleagues and others outside of your organisation
  • The ability to effectively communicate complex issues to a range of internal and external audiences, both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, think creatively and work independently
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team and to contribute proactively to support a sustainable, high-performing team environment
  • Application of good project management, in support of the efficient operational management of your immediate team and Ofgem more widely
Desirable:
  • Applied experience of regulatory or competition economics in a commercial, consulting or public sector environment
  • An understanding of the operation of energy markets, and the ability to build and maintain detailed knowledge of particular areas of relevance to your work
  • Theoretical or applied knowledge of econometrics and/or economic modelling
