Organizational Setting |
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security formulates and implements the IAEA's Major Programme 3, "Nuclear Safety and Security", which encompasses the IAEA's activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the safety and security related needs of its Member States. The Safety and Security Coordination Section (SSCS) is located in the Office of the Deputy Director General, Head of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security. The mission of the SSCS is to ensure technical consistency and coordination between the IAEA's activities under the nuclear, radiation, transport and waste safety and nuclear security programmes. The Section comprises three units, the Safety and Security Publications Unit, the Programme and Policy Unit, and the Knowledge Networks Unit. |
Main purpose |
Reporting to the Head of the Programme and Policy Unit in the Safety and Security Coordination Section, the Safety Officer contributes to and coordinates the improvement and implementation of the IAEA's concept of capacity building and infrastructure on safety and security in the Member States and internally the capacity building and quality management system of the Department. |
Role |
As a team member of the Programme and Policy Unit, the Safety Officer is: (1) a project manager, developing, implementing and improving the Departmental capacity building programme, defining and facilitating the sharing and creating of common knowledge among staff; (2) an analyst, categorizing and analyzing relevant information and knowledge resources; (3) a quality manager, drafting and implementing procedures for the whole Department to support missions and other high profile activities, ensuring that these processes are sustainable and encouraging continuous improvement; (4) a liaisonwith other Departments within the IAEA in relation to capacity building and infrastructure development for nuclear safety and security in Member States interested in embarking on a nuclear power programme or expanding their existing programme and providing assistance to Member States in the conduct of self-assessment for capacity building activities. |
Partnerships |
The Safety Officer ensures overall coordination of Member States' experts participating in capacity building activities by planning and implementing education and training, human resource development, knowledge management and knowledge networks activities and facilitating the sharing of information and experience among Member States' participants. He/she works closely with representatives of other IAEA Departments in interdepartmental working groups, with Member States and their relevant institutions and other international organizations. |

Remuneration |
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $56 198 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $37 540*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave,pension plan and health insurance.
