Internship in the civil society relations unit

The Civil Society Relations Unit is a reference unit for building and managing relationships with key civil society actors and mobilising them on issues of concern to the ICRC. The unit's areas of expertise are:

  • International Humanitarian Law (IHL) education and outreach to youth-at-risk
  • Promotion of IHL at universities and outreach to academia and think tanks
  • Quality onsite and online IHL training for civil society audiences

The Civil Society Relations Unit is offering a one-year paid internship entailing the following tasks: management of an online course, development of new digital resources, and support to the unit’s internal communication. The intern will work under the supervision of the Legal and Training Adviser.

Responsibilities and Tasks:

1. Manage the Online IHL Course and Develop Other Digital Resources

  • Register participants
  • Provide technical and educational support
  • Moderate a forum
  • Compile, analyse and share the outcome of the course evaluations
  • Support the development of the professional version of the online course
  • Contribute to identifying the technical means and support needed to further develop the unit's digital resources

2. Contribute to the Development and Management of the Online Casebook
The Online Casebook is a web-based adaptation of the ICRC publication "How Does Law Protect in War?"

  • Technical assistance to the Online Casebook web-editor (1st semester: creation of the online casebook concept, insertion of the documents into the CMS)
  • Technical assistance to the Online Casebook manager (2nd semester: insertion of new documents, posting of "news" items, response to technical questions from users, analysis of website traffic, and preparation of statistical reports)

3. Internal Communication

  • Assist in developing PowerPoint presentations
  • Promote unit products: creation of leaflets, posters, etc.
  • Conduct online surveys
  • Contribute to the development of unit newsletter
  • Support the unit’s use of social media

Required training and experience:

  • University degree or equivalent in learning and communication technologies (e.g. educational technology, e-learning, interactive multimedia, ICT - information and communication technology).
  • Practical experience in learning and communication technologies, computer-supported collaborative learning, virtual learning environments, computer-mediated communication, information systems in education, and distance education an advantage.
  • Familiarity with e-learning tools such as Articulate, Adobe Captivate, Scenari Opale and Flash.
  • Familiarity with communication tools such as PowerPoint, survey applications (e.g. Zoomerang, SurveyMonkey), photo and video editing softwares (e.g. Photoshop, Paintnet, Windows Movie Maker), e-mail/marketing softwares.

Desired skills and profile:

  • Good editing skills in English, fluency in French
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Sense of initiative
  • Interest in humanitarian law and humanitarian action an advantage
