Research Assistant – Khojaly Project (Armenia) University of Leicester

University of Leicester - Law

At Leicester we're going places. Ranked in the top 20 universities in Britain our aim is to climb further. A commitment to high quality fused with an inclusive academic culture is our hallmark and led the Times Higher Education to describe us as "elite without being elitist".

The University of Leicester offers a unique opportunity to examine an event in the Nagorno-Karabakh war which continues to play a significant role in international relations. As our Research Assistant, you will have the chance to work independently, but as part of a wider team, on a fact finding mission of an outstanding research initiative.

"Khojaly - A Legal Analysis" is a research initiative which investigates the massacre at the town of Khojaly - an event which took place during the Nagorno-Karabakh war in February 1992, and which involved the killings of Azerbaijani civilians who tried to flee the town. It will also examine related crimes, such as the taking of hostages from among the Azerbaijani population. The main focus of the project is on the legal evaluation of the events, the investigation of questions of State responsibility and the assessment of judicial and other options to deal with the aftermath of the events.

You will primarily deal with the identification and processing of facts. Your role therefore includes the consultation of relevant military and historical archives, and interviews with persons who can offer an insight into the events. You will also provide translations of the relevant findings (both of interviews and documentary materials) to the Principal Investigator.

It is expected that the work of the Research Assistant in Armenia will focus in particular on the role of the Armenian forces in these events.
