Executive Director, Intellectual Capital University of Chicago Booth

We are seeking a highly qualified individual for a once-in-a-career opportunity to lead a new initiative at Chicago Booth.

We seek to better exploit the wealth of intellectual capital created by our faculty. The Executive Director, Intellectual Capital serves as the Chief Knowledge Officer, and is charged with creating a vision for sharing and disseminating that intellectual capital and overseeing the implementation of that vision. The Executive Director is responsible for managing the translation of faculty research and programmatic materials to a wide variety of audiences including alumni, media, and general business audiences, through a wide variety of media ranging from traditional print to social media. The Executive Director will hire, develop and lead a core staff of research writers, journalists and others to accomplish the objectives of the organization.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Enhance the translation of faculty research, programmatic material and other intellectual capital to a wide variety of key audiences and stakeholders through a wide variety of media.
  • Improve the organization of and access to faculty research; programmatic material; conference material; center activity; and other sources of knowledge to create an enhanced experience for a variety of audiences including alumni, media and general business.
  • Create and implement processes for collecting, managing and disseminating an inventory of past content with proper tagging and other methodologies.
  • Create and implement similar processes for organizing new content as it becomes available through a multitude of sources (research, conferences, teaching, etc.).
  • Create new content based on faculty research, exemplary student experiences, and select alumni accomplishments than can be drawn upon throughout the Chicago Booth environment.
  • Build and lead an effective team of a few domain specialists that helps accomplish responsibilities #1- #3.
  • Partner with the Executive Director, Marketing when his or her domain knowledge is needed to properly position and market the content produced by this team.
  • Partner with the Executive Director, Communications when his or her domain knowledge is needed to properly position content with respective audiences.
  • Articulate the purpose and nature of managing Booth’s Intellectual capital and embody it in all appropriate initiatives and programs.

    CORE COMPETENCES:

    The Executive Director must be a self-starter who is intellectually curious, excited about “creating”, and possess the understanding needed for building knowledge-synthesizing and capturing capabilities.

    The Executive Director must have the ability to work with Booth Faculty to understand their research at an appropriate level through a variety of forums, and to spot potential dissemination opportunities. He/she should also be able to converse with from high-level business executives at the appropriate level.

    The Executive Director must have an entrepreneurial style, and be capable of putting together a team of domain specialists where none exists today.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:

    1. 10 years of experience in business, business-oriented journalism or appropriate academic environments that has resulted in significant exposure to a variety of business topics required.

    2. Journalistic or other experience identifying information of significant interest and consequent dissemination required.

    3. Demonstrated domain knowledge in one or more fields associated with Chicago Booth (such as Economics, Finance, etc)

    4. Master’s Degree or advanced degree in business or closely related fields preferred. Undergraduate degree required

    5. Proven and extensive experience writing and editing business material.

    6. A minimum of 2 years working with or in research-based environments preferred.

    7. Experience with Knowledge Management programs in an academic environment preferred.

    8. At least 3 years of leadership experience required

    9. Proven ability to create and implement an organization strategy and charter preferred.
