The Human Genetics Division within the Department of Genetics boasts state-of-the-art research infrastructure, facilities and equipment, and provides the South African society with qualified human resources, cutting-edge technology and the latest scientific knowledge.
This vacancy is ideally suited for a person with a background in human genetics. The appointee will become part of a dynamic teaching corps.
Duties:
• Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Genetics/Human Genetics;
• developing and evaluating course material in Genetics/Human Genetics;
• supervising postgraduate students;
• conducting an active and productive research programme in Human Genetics, preferably within the context of existing research focus areas;
• sourcing and managing research funding;
• continuously publishing research results by means of articles and congress papers that will develop national and international research and industry partnerships and networks;
• rendering services to the Department, the University and relevant environments.
Requirements:
Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer/Lecturer
• PhD in Genetics or a related field;
• a proven record of teaching, research and publication in the field of human genetics (commensurate with the level of appointment). Associate Professor – A proven record of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Genetics;
• an excellent and sustained record of publications in recognised journals in the field of human genetics;
• demonstrated ability to obtain research funds;
• a proven track record of successful Doctoral and Masters supervision.
Senior Lecturer:
• A sound base of relevant undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience (in either Afrikaans or English);
• experience in successful postgraduate outputs;
• a growing publication output in the field of human genetics;
• ability to obtain research funds;
• ability to co-operate within a team.
Lecturer:
• Ability to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses (in either Afrikaans or English);
• ability to supervise postgraduate students and write applications for research funds;
• ability to co-operate within a team.
Recommendations:
All Post Levels
• Sound interpersonal relations;
• a keen interest in a research field that is a good fit with the departmental Human Genetics research profile;
• computer proficiency;
• language proficiency in Afrikaans and English.
Commencement of duties: 1 June 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter
