IOC is a leading Canadian producer of iron ore concentrate and iron ore pellets serving customers worldwide. The Company operates a mine, concentrator and a pelletizing plant in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as port facilities located in Sept-Îles, in the Province of Quebec. It also operates a 418-kilometer railroad that links the mine to the port. As a Manager, Environment and Social Responsibility, you will be responsible for providing advice and management on Environmental issues for site operations and sustainability issues. The role will be important role in supporting the sustainable environmental strategy which meets both Rio Tinto and legislative needs. The Manager will lead a team of IOC Environmental and Social professionals and consultants and drive the on-going development and implementation of facility strategies to achieve that goal.
In view of the preceding, the Manager , Environment and Social Responsibility will be responsible but not limited to the following;
- Provides support to Superintendents, Managers and the GMs at Labrador City operations to ensure they achieve compliance with RT Standards and government regulations.
- Assists with development and implementation of the 5 year strategic environmental plan for IOC.
- Helps educate the supervisory staff in Environment and SR team and Labrador City site teams and all other stakeholders on environmental issues by advising and working with them, and advocates the use of better environmental management practices so as to improve environmental performance.
- Participates in environment related meetings and audits with the focus on improving IOC environmental performance. Ensures environmental aspects are considered in all site projects and activities.
- Works with local external stakeholders (Non-governmental organizations, community representatives) to explain environmental and social responsibility actions taken by IOC; and develops partnerships and strategies to improve IOC's reputation.
- Proactively works with regulators and IOC supervisory personnel to help limit the company's exposure to citations and defines applicable abatement requirements.
- Communicates information about pending regulations, legislation and/or company standards with respect to their applicability and impact on the site operations and the broader organization.
- Supports the Environment and SR team to ensure that all activities conducted meet IOC and RT Environmental Management System (EMS) requirements, RT standards and relevant federal, provincial and local regulations. Develops and implements systems and programs to improve environmental performance at the sites.
- Implements HSEQ and identifies how IOC will meet its required targets.
- Leads and participates in the review and approval of Environmental Improvement Action Plans.
- Provides interpretation of Rio Tinto's environmental regulatory standards and federal/provincial regulations with respect to their application to site operations.
- Manages site reporting including annual reports (internal & external).
- Facilitates / leads site inspections and audits. Prepares reports related to internal EMS, site performance, compliance audits, etc.
- Manages own team in accordance with IOC policies and procedures by providing the necessary support and guidelines to achieve annual targets.
- Makes financial forecasts for operating expenses and capital investments linked to environmental aspects, controls costs and justifies variances as needed.
- Manages E and SR budget for Lab City operations.
- Initiates requests for capital investment and operating expenses, and works with the business evaluation and engineering departments to prepare the related documents and to perform the work in question.
- Evaluates major capital projects to ensure they follow the company's environmental and sustainable development principles and pursue its objectives in that area.
College/University Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences or an equivalent combination of experience and education
Other Qualifications:
- Minimum 10 years experience in social and / or environmental management
- Experience in managing Social and Environmental Impact Assessments (SEIAs) and integrating S&E aspects into project designs
- Knowledge of Federal and Provincial environmental requirements
- Project management experience is required
Preferred experience/knowledge:
- Working knowledge of RT Standards
- Management/ Project Management Qualification
