Research Associate University of Cambridge

University of Cambridge - Faculty of Computer Science & Technology

Limit of tenure: up to 36 months

A Research Associate position has become available on an EPSRC grant to enabling growth of ICT networks while at the same time reducing energy consumption.

The vision of the 'INTelligent Energy awaRE NETworks' (INTERNET) project is to reduce the carbon footprint of ICT networks by at least an order of magnitude - along with a corresponding reduction in non-renewable energy consumption. This will enable comparable growth beyond the current energy barrier.

The appointee will be engaged in the design and implementation of new networking designs.

Capitalising on local expertise with NetFPGA hardware (www.netfpga.org), we anticipate an implementation-centric approach testing new protocols in a variety of testbed and real-world circumstances to characterise and develop designs. While methodologically we bias towards running-code, there is considerable flexibility on the precise approach taken.

An output of this work will be measuring specific information (on energy-use) and providing this through appropriate APIs, thereby permitting (for example) the optimisation of components within a network.

A publication track record is desirable although a track record of relevant programming experience will be prioritised above prior publication experience.

The successful candidate should have a PhD in an appropriate discipline such as Computer Science, Engineering or Mathematics; expertise in computer and network system design, and the design of digital systems and, ideally, experience with the design of networking equipment, protocols, software and hardware.
