Translation Specialist-English and Japanese

The Translation Specialist is responsible for translating documents (technical and non technical) from Japanese to English and vice versa, as well as proofreading, editing and copywriting translations for Deal Hub in IBM Japan. Materials to be translated are varied and include proposals, fact sheets and contracts from a wide range of industries. Responsibilities also include coordinating administrative and translation activities for the Deal Hub Translation Project.

Duties Performed
1 – Produce an accurate and natural English translation of Japanese documents to be sent to the client by the required deadline by:
- Translating Japanese document content accurately into natural English in a style that is appropriate for the type of document. (Materials to be translated are varied and include proposals, fact sheets and contracts from a wide range of industries).
- Researching reference, training and other materials in order to gain a good understanding of the original document content.
- Proofreading, editing and copywriting translations in order to ensure a high standard of output.
- Managing one’s time in order to produce requested translation by the deadline required by the team and the client.
- Communicating with the client and other stakeholders to provide them with regular translation status updates and reports on translation activities.

2 – Improve the AP Translation Team’s knowledge base by:
- Working collaboratively with team members to share ideas and knowledge in relation to translation.
- Attending and participating in team meetings and team training programs.
- Adding information where necessary to shared team dictionaries and educational materials
- Providing constructive feedback to other team members in relation to translation, grammar, punctuation and document formatting.

Knowledge
Mandatory:
Possesses understanding of:
- Managing one’s time and prioritising tasks
- General business software, including word-processing, e-mail, internet, presentation and spread sheeting software
- The Japanese and English languages
- The IT industry and general technology solutions

Preferred:
Possesses understanding of:
- The Deal Hub concept within IBM
- Project administration
- The financial, pharmaceutical and automobile industries

Education
- Industry qualifications in translation for translation between Japanese and English (e.g. NAATI accreditation or similar)
- Tertiary qualifications in translating, editing or copywriting

Skills and Abilities
Mandatory:
- Demonstrated ability to translate between Japanese and English
- Demonstrated ability to create and update reports, spreadsheets and presentations using general business software such as MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.

Work Conditions:
- Office environment
- Core hours: 10am - 6pm, Monday to Friday (required to work on Australian Public holiday to meet customer requirements in Japan)
- 37.5 hours a week (may be required to work overtime to meet business needs)
Required
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • At least 1 year experience in Japanese and English translation
  • English: Fluent
  • Japanese: Fluent

Preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree in Arts & Humanities
