Assistant Professor of Plant Physiology and Plant Nutrition

The University of Idaho invites applications for a faculty position in plant physiology and nutrition to join the multi-disciplinary team at the University of Idaho Moscow Campus. The successful applicant will have an appointment in the Department of Plant, Soil and Entomological Sciences and will serve as an assistant professor of plant physiology and nutrition. This is a 12-month tenure track position; 80% research, 20% teaching; salary commensurate with qualifications/experience.

Responsibilities:
The successful applicant will have an appointment in the Department of Plant, Soil and Entomological Sciences and will be part of one or more multi-disciplinary teams, such as Sustainable Potato Cropping Systems or Sustainable Small Grain Cropping Systems. Excellent opportunities exist for collaboration with faculty in agronomy, horticulture, plant breeding, plant molecular biology, soils and entomology. Specific responsibilities include: develop an innovative, internationally recognized, externally funded research program focusing on using plant nutrition to improve yield and value-added traits of agronomic cereal crops and horticultural crops, such as potato. Research will include field and laboratory components. Potential research areas may include, but are not limited to, studying the effects of genetics on plant nutrition, improving mineral nutrition to enhance sustainable crop production, and enhancing plant responses to abiotic and biotic stresses through improved mineral nutrition. Teaching responsibilities include a course in Plant Physiology and a specialty course in plant nutrition. Graduate student education is expected. External funding is expected. The successful candidate will collaborate with other faculty members in PSES and CALS, present research seminars, participate in professional meetings and publish in refereed journals. Information will be communicated to stakeholders through outreach.

Qualifications:
Required: An earned Ph.D. in plant nutrition, plant physiology, agronomy, botany, horticulture, or closely related field by October 1, 2012, and training or interest in fundamental and applied plant physiology and nutrition research. The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to initiate, complete and publish research, work effectively with team-based research programs, colleagues and clientele, and must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.

Desirable: Experience in plant physiology and/or nutrition research; post-Ph.D. experience in plant nutrition or physiology; demonstrated experience with horticultural crop or small grain culture; training or experience in developing or delivering university courses; demonstrated ability to compete for competitive grant funding. Training or experience in advising students or lab personnel; evidence of participation in professional activities; knowledge and practical use of experimental design.
