Exposure Assessment Scientist II

BASF Agricultural Solutions, located in Research Triangle Park, NC is headquarters for the BASF Crop Protection Products NAFTA Division, BASF Plant Science L.L.C, BASF Global Insecticide Research, and BASF Global Agricultural Research & Development.

We are searching for outstanding candidates who are interested to work for BASF - The Chemical Company. We have an immediate opportunity available for a Technical Expert - Environmental Fate in the Crop Protection Division at our Research Triangle Park, NC location.

The selected candidate will become part of an established, global interdisciplinary research team focused on the development and registration of new BASF plant protection products as well as supporting life cycle management of our portfolios. The selected candidate will work closely and collaboratively with internal technical experts in relevant units such as global and/or regional registration, formulations, analytics, field biology, ecotoxicology, toxicology and global and regional marketing, as well as externally with national and global regulatory authorities, and industry associations and task forces. More specifically, the selected candidate will serve as a global and/or regional Environmental Fate Expert for various active substance projects to successfully conduct the following tasks:

- Monitor and interpret regulatory science laboratory and field studies that are focused on the fate and behavior of plant protection products in the environment in order to meet registration guidelines of regulatory agencies
- Utilize environmental fate data and agronomic information to conduct appropriate exposure assessments using modeling tools for use in global regulatory dossiers and development strategies
- Manage multiple, complex projects focused on meeting the environmental fate requirements for the registration of new active substances. Develop innovative approaches in addressing regulatory challenges and timeline constraints
- Support registration managers in the preparation of dossiers and responses to regulatory agencies
- For assigned portfolio, provide input on the appropriate environmental fate studies needed for regulatory dossiers and development strategies, including new studies as well as assessment of quality and completeness of existing studies
- Work with external research organizations to contract regulatory science studies needed for registrations, and act as the study monitor for such studies

QUALIFICATIONS: - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Required:

Degree in Soil Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field with a broad working knowledge of one or more fields of Chemical or Agricultural Science. Minimum requirement is a PhD, or MS with at least 5 years of post-degree experience in an appropriate discipline, or a BS with at least 9 years of post-degree experience in an appropriate discipline.

The required technical skills include:

- Working knowledge of environmental models used for pesticide registration purposes in the US and EU. These could include MACRO, PEARL, PRZM, PELMO, TOXSWA, ModelMaker, KinGUI and technical guidance documents for deriving kinetic endpoints in NAFTA and the EU
- Practical knowledge of the environmental fate studies used to generate key modeling end points.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work efficiently and effectively as both an independent scientist and a significant team contributor of a global, multidisciplinary research team. Multi-tasking will be key to develop, implement, manage and complete multiple complex projects, including solving complex technical problems, in the attainment of goals and time lines for multiple stakeholders. Excellent oral (including presentation) and written communication skills are required.

In addition to the Required Skills above:

- A highly qualified candidate will have a PhD and 3+ years post-degree experience, an MS and 10+ years post-degree experience, or BS and 14+ years post-degree experience in research and development in a life science field. An advanced degree is preferred
- Thorough knowledge of environmental models used for pesticide registration purposes in the US and EU. This includes standard and higher-tier assessments with commonly used models, including but not restricted to: MACRO, PEARL, PRZM, PELMO, TOXSWA; excellent knowledge of degradation kinetics software tools (ModeIMaker, Kinetica, KinGUI) and technical guidance documents for deriving kinetic endpoints for EU assessments
- Knowledge of plant protection products, the agricultural products industry, and of agronomic practices is highly beneficial
- Working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
- Experience interacting with global and/or national regulatory authorities
