Head the TRAFFIC [India] Programme

The TRAFFIC Network is a joint conservation programme of WWF and IUCN-The International Union for the Conservation of Nature. It was established in 1976, since when it has developed into a worldwide network with a considerable international reputation for helping to identify and address conservation challenges linked to wildlife trade.

TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, works to ensure that trade in wild animals and plants is not a threat to the conservation of nature. TRAFFIC actively monitors and investigates wildlife trade and provides its information to diverse audiences worldwide as a basis for effective conservation policies and programmes. The organization was founded in 1976 and has grown into an international network, with more than 20 offices worldwide, organized in eight regional programmes.

TRAFFIC operates as a Programme Division of WWF-India, based in New Delhi. The TRAFFIC Head will lead an active TRAFFIC team working in India.

Location:

New Delhi, with need to travel as required.

Tenure:

The duration of the contract is for a 3 year period subject to extension as may be decided.


The Job Profile:

  • Leads and co-ordinates implementation of TRAFFIC’s conservation programme in India.
  • Manages the TRAFFIC team in India, including technical and financial oversight, and is responsible for further development of the team.
  • Collaborates with senior colleagues in the international TRAFFIC network in developing projects necessary to deliver the TRAFFIC global conservation programme
  • Coordinates with other TRAFFIC offices and partner organizations.
  • Provides support to CITES Management Authority and other institutions and individuals in implementation of CITES and strengthening wildlife law enforcement.
  • Manages effective implementation of the India work programme to expected TRAFFIC quality standards, including activities in the areas of research, policy development, communications and capacity building.
  • Manages the budget of TRAFFIC India and ensures effective administration and accounting of funds and the accurate and timely reporting of consolidated and project-related financial statements and accounts.

Qualifications, Experience & Skills required:

The position requires understanding of and experience in:
  • wildlife conservation
  • law enforcement in the context of wildlife management
  • training and capacity building, especially in collaboration with government agencies
  • managing of a dedicated and specialist team. The detailed requirements of this position are:

Essential
  1. A post graduate degree in natural science, political science, social science, law or economics.
  2. A minimum of 15 years of experience in conservation, familiarity with major trends in biodiversity conservation in India, strong understanding of policies and issues relevant to the international trade in wild animals and plants.
  3. Candidates must be mature and experienced individuals and able to provide leadership to the programme at a senior level.

Desirable
  1. A good understanding of CITES and other international conservation laws and agreements, of wildlife management and sustainable development issues, and of South Asian policies regarding the conservation, use of and trade in biological resources.
  2. Understanding of the functioning of government management structures in India and the wider South Asia region related to trade in wild animals and plants.
  3. Strong skills in programme management, analysis of research results, planning and project implementation.
  4. A willingness to travel widely and frequently and work under pressure
Other Important Skills & Competencies:
  • Good interpersonal, supervisory and leadership skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Fundraising experience and financial management skills.
  • Designing and conducting training programmes.
  • Fluency in English and Hindi, and excellent writing skills.
  • Communications skills and experience of working with the media, report writing and content development.
  • Familiarity with standard word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and data base software, and with electronic communication technology.

Remuneration will be competitive with Indian NGO pay scales and will depend upon candidate’s experience levels and the overall WWF-India salary structure. WWF-India does not provide housing and vehicle facilities.
