Background

The Economist Digital team is charged with replicating The Economist’s high-quality, weekly, immersive, lean-back reading experience on the digital reading devices our target audience is using. The team currently manages the product development and publication on various e-readers, tablets and smartphones. As our digital editions audience grows, more and more advertising clients are wishing to take advantage of the medium and place rich, interactive ads within our mobile applications.

Summary of job

We are looking for a skilled freelance HTML5 developer with an eye for creative design to work with our Digital department to help bring our advertising client’s global brands to life within our mobile applications.

Initial requirement is 3 days work per week, based in Central London. This position would be suitable for a developer looking to get some experience working on creative solutions.

We're looking for someone motivated, talented, and with an enthusiasm for working on interactive design solutions. You'll work very closely with our in-house developers, as well as stakeholders from the sales teams, which will require strong communication skills.

Key accountabilities

  • Working with clients to assist with their execution and delivery of interactive advertising within The Economist apps.
  • Creating HTML5 implementations of advertising concepts
  • Rebuilding existing HTML5 advertising implementations to refine their performance in our mobile apps
  • Serving as a technical expert to assist decision-making within internal teams
  • Providing support to the ad-sales team and advice on best practices for digital design

Skills and capabilities requirements

  • Strong skills in developing HTML5 front-ends, particularly on mobile platforms such as iOS
  • Expertise in JavaScript, and knowledge of libraries such as JQuery
  • Expertise in CSS, and knowledge of new features in CSS3 such as animation
  • An eye for good user interface design, and knowledge of wireframes and prototyping
  • Knowledge of client-server interaction, AJAX, HTTP etc.
  • An understanding of accessibility issues and standards compliance
  • Ability to write clear and precise functional and technical specifications
  • Knowledge and experience with the Adobe Creative Suite would be advantageous
