Vacancy Notice: Nippon Foundation Professor of Maritime Education

The World Maritime University was established in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations. WMU is working to enhance its role as a global centre of excellence for postgraduate education and research in the maritime field. WMU offers three Master of Science programs, one in Sweden and two in China, and a Ph.D. program in Maritime Affairs that offers doctoral students opportunities for research across the maritime field, from shipping & port management to maritime safety & security.

The Nippon Foundation has endowed three professorial Chairs at WMU, and within the coming months, we are seeking to fill the Nippon Foundation Chair in the area of maritime education and training, preferably with a specialization or experience in corporate social responsibility (CSR) or the human element (HE).

Responsibilities
Professors are expected, under the supervision of the Vice-President (Academic) to be engaged in:
• Teaching, including engagement in the MSc teaching programs in Malmö, and other locations as needed and assigned,
• Involvement in distance education and Professional Development Courses (PDCs), as required,
• Mentoring of PhD and MSc students and supervision of research theses/dissertations,
• Scholarship in the form of publications in peer-reviewed journals, books, book chapters, etc.,
• The development of research projects, submission of project proposals, management of projects,
• Presentation of research findings at professional conferences and meetings,
• Service on WMU committees and work groups, and active participation in administrative, academic, and curriculum duties.

Qualifications, competencies and professional experience

The successful candidate will have:
• A doctorate in maritime affairs or education, with preferred experience in maritime education and training, corporate social responsibility and/or the human element in the maritime sector,
• A minimum of 3-5 years experience in teaching and research environment at university level,
• Experience in teaching at the postgraduate level,
• A track record in research and scholarly publication in the maritime field,
• Professional experience in the maritime transport sector, and seafaring experience is desirable,
• Fluency in spoken and written English,
• Effective communication skills in an international and diverse academic community.
