Assistant Dean for International Affairs


The University of Michigan Law School (Ann Arbor, USA) is seeking applications from exceptional individuals for the position of Assistant Dean for International Affairs.
The Law School, founded in 1859, is one of the world’s leading institutions of legal education and a long time pioneer in preparing its students for the global practice of law.  It has stood at the forefront of global legal education through its faculty, one third of whom teach in international, comparative, and foreign law; a student body keenly interested in global legal practice;a 150-year history of engagement with foreign legal institutions and students; a path breaking required course for all students in transnational law; an extremely selective graduate LLM and SJD program for foreign students; clinical opportunities to work on transnational problems; a large network of alumni around the world in leading legal, policy, business, and academic positions; long-term institutional ties with major foreign law schools, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations; numerous programs and fellowships for study and work abroad; and close integration with other schools and departments of the University of Michigan focusing on international studies. 
The Assistant Dean will exercise overall responsibility for the daily operation and strategic development of international programs, initiatives, and outreach at the Law School, under the supervision of the Dean and in coordination with faculty members and other senior administrators.  The Law School is seeking applications from individuals with the following qualifications:
  • a Juris Doctor degree or equivalent;
  • knowledge about the United States legal system and the U.S. landscape of legal education;
  • significant experience in legal practice, legal education, or law-related work with an international dimension;
  • cross-cultural competency;
  • substantial organizational and administrative experience, including the ability to give close attention to program management details and to offer sustained follow-up on initiatives, as well as competence in budget management;
  • interpersonal skills for interaction  and collaboration with, and support for, diverse stakeholders in the Law School’s and University’s global missions, including students, faculty, administrators, and alumni;
  • eagerness and talent for representing the Law School externally, including with alumni, visitors, donors and potential donors, and representatives of other institutions in the U.S. and abroad;
  • a capacity for creative and strategic thinking as well as program development regarding future global initiatives.
Additional preferred attributes include foreign language competency as well as alumnus/alumna status.
