EXECUTIVE IN RESIDENCE - THE CARTER CENTER

Founded in 1982 by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, The Carter Center (TCC) was created to advance peace and health worldwide.  Based in Atlanta, Georgia and operating in partnership with Emory University, TCC is guided by a fundamental commitment to human rights and the alleviation of human suffering.  The Center seeks to actively prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health.  As a nongovernmental organization, the Center has helped to improve life for people in more than 70 countries by resolving conflicts; advancing democracy, human rights, and economic opportunity; preventing diseases; improving mental health care; and teaching farmers to increase crop production.
While the program agenda may change over time as priorities and world events inevitably shift, The Carter Center is guided by five principles:
  1. The Center emphasizes action and results. Based on careful research and analysis, it is prepared to take timely action on important and pressing issues.
  2. The Center does not duplicate the effective efforts of others.
  3. The Center addresses difficult problems and recognizes the possibility of failure as an acceptable risk.
  4. The Center is nonpartisan and acts as a neutral in dispute resolution activities.
  5. The Center believes that people can improve their lives when provided with the necessary skills, knowledge, and access to resources.

The Carter Center collaborates with other organizations, public or private, in carrying out its mission around the world.

The Position

The Executive in Residence will report directly to the President and CEO, Dr. John Hardman.  The purpose of the position is to inform, equip, assimilate and prepare the Executive in Residence to become the preferred candidate for succession to the President and CEO upon the transition of TCC leadership from Dr. Hardman to his successor.  Succession of leadership is a key focus for The Center’s Board of Trustees. To address this leadership succession initiative, they have proactively created this new position specifically to identify, qualify and hire the executive designated as the person to join The Center’s leadership team, immerse himself/herself in the programs and activities of The Center, assume important management and leadership responsibilities as a key executive in The Center and become the eventual successor to the CEO.  The Executive in Residence is expected to be joining The Center at a time commensurate with the final phase of the currently active five year strategic review of programs and operations.

The anticipated timeline associated with the assimilation and equipping of the Executive in Residence will be as follows:

Year One: Full immersion into the programs, operations and activities of The Center and engagement in the activities of Emory University.  This year includes participation in program activities around the world, learning from and spending considerable time interacting with the existing leadership team, with Dr. Hardman in the full range of his activities, the four Center Vice Presidents and with both President and Mrs. Carter.  The Executive in Residence will attend and participate in executive staff meetings, Board of Trustee meetings, Board of Councilors meetings, international health program reviews, election monitoring missions, work with Center leadership on implementation of the strategic plan and other program and fundraising activities.  At the end of Year One, the Executive in Residence will participate in an extensive review process at a designated time with the President and CEO and the Chair of the Board of Trustees to determine next steps in his/her development/alignment process and to delineate, with specific detail, his/her progress toward the targeted succession outcome.

Year Two: Will assume specific leadership and decision making responsibilities as a key, fully-functioning member of the executive leadership of The Center. During this period, the actual duties and responsibilities of the role will change significantly in order to give the Executive in Residence specific responsibility for designated day-to-day operations of the office of the President and CEO.

By the end of Year Two, the Executive in Residence will engage with the President and CEO and the Board of Trustees to determine mutual enthusiasm and interest in him/her becoming The Center’s President and CEO.  Such transition will be effective on a date specific to be determined upon the Executive in Residence’s initial hiring into the role. It may also be the time at which the Executive in Residence could potentially become an adjunct faculty member at Emory University.
