Program Officer - Outreach Programming - Muscatine, IA


The Stanley Foundation seeks a program officer for its Policy and Outreach Department to develop working relationships with media gatekeepers and citizen leaders vital to the fulfillment of foundation goals. The successful applicant will work toward developing public and media awareness and understanding of multilateralism in general and of specific foundation policy initiatives.  This work involves both developing relationships with media gatekeepers and generating events and material that raises the foundation’s profile and increases public understanding of international issues.  This person will ultimately strengthen the foundation’s ability to work with the media and the public in an educational and collaborative manner.

The program officer reports to the Director of Policy and Outreach and works closely with other foundation program officers and experts. This is an excellent opportunity to shape and focus programming and analysis that fits within the foundation’s highly regarded work on evolving global systems, human protection, and nuclear security.

LOCATION. This position is located at the foundation headquarters in Muscatine, Iowa, a community of 23,000 people on the Mississippi River. The area offers affordable housing, good schools, and a variety of recreational opportunities.

Qualifications


The ideal candidate will be very knowledgeable about the media and the news process.  Experience and knowledge of international relations issues is also required.  The applicant must have a minimum of a B.A., preferably in journalism, communications, international relations, political science, or another relevant discipline. 

In addition, a candidate should possess: 

·         Project team leadership experience.
·         Strong organizational and writing skills.
·         Strong communication skills and the willingness to work with communication professionals.
·         The ability to meet deadlines.
·         The ability to work with minimal supervision and in a team setting. 

Desirable traits include: 

·         Some knowledge of audio/video/new media production.
·         Experience covering international issues
·         Experience with advocacy-oriented or membership-based NGOs.
·         Experience with policy or foundation programming. 

The position requires frequent travel.
