IRCT Head of Legal and Advocacy Team


The IRCT is a health-based umbrella organization, which supports the rehabilitation of torture victims and prevention of torture worldwide.
Our members currently include 144 independent organizations in 73 countries. Our work is guided by these member organizations. Today, we are the organization with the largest number of members from civil society that are working in the field of rehabilitation and prevention of torture.
HEAD OF THE LEGAL AND ADVOCACY TEAM (Maternity replacement)
Background The International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) is currently recruiting a maternity replacement for our Head of Legal and Advocacy Team. You will be part of our senior management team and will report directly to the Secretary-General.
The position As Head of the Legal and Advocacy Team you will be leading IRCTs work on international human rights law compliance and advocacy, including the representation towards UN, EU and other regional human rights mechanisms.
The position is based in Copenhagen, Denmark. The position is a maternity replacement, time limited until June 2014 and to start as soon as possible. Please indicate your availability in your application.
Key responsibilities • Leading the global legal and advocacy work of the IRCT as part of core work and projects • Leading IRCT’s work on access to justice, including the use of forensic documentation and promotion of the Istanbul Protocol • Providing training and capacity support to IRCT member centres on legal and advocacy issues • Managing staff based in Copenhagen, Geneva and Brussels. • Support to organisational development and work of the governance bodies • The position requires regular international travel
Knowledge and experience • At least 5 years of relevant work experience with international human rights law and advocacy • At least 3 years of work experience as a manager • Knowledge of work processes of UN, EU and other regional human rights mechanisms • Experience in managing projects and budgets of significant amounts • Experience in working in a multi-disciplinary, cross cultural team • Work experience from the anti-torture field is an asset • Work experience with the Istanbul Protocol and access to justice is an asset
Personal and communication skills • Ability to work remotely and independently with an understanding of working in a multi-site environment • Open personal style and excellent interpersonal skills • Strong skills in analysis, planning and prioritization, and ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including speaking in public • Fluency in English both spoken and written, knowledge of Spanish or other language is an asset • Interest in the work area of the IRCT

Compensation The Head of the Legal and Advocacy Team will be offered a competitive salary commensurate with the nature of the post.
