Organizational Setting |
The Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences is one of several divisions and laboratories in the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications. The Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences is responsible for assisting and advising Member States in research and development for the nuclear sciences, especially the physical and chemical sciences. Specifically, the following fields are supported: production of radioisotopes and radiolabelled products for applications in healthcare and industry; radiation source applications; research reactor utilization; applications of accelerators and nuclear instrumentation; nuclear and atomic data for applications; controlled nuclear fusion and isotope hydrology and geochemistry. The Nuclear Data Section (NDS) is primarily responsible for the generation and maintenance of a number of high-quality and fundamental nuclear and atomic databases and providing services to users worldwide. The main means of dissemination is via the NDS website which provides interactive tools to present required data. The operating environment is dynamic, participative and interactive with inputs received from the Board of Governors, the General Conference, policy and decision-makers, and technical counterparts in Member States and the international development community. |
Main purpose |
As a key member of the Data Development Unit, led by the Unit Head and with additional guidance from the Section Head, the Nuclear Physicist leads coordinated reserach projects (CRPs), produces technical publications, develops databases relevant to international users, develops theoretical techniques required for calculations and evaluations, develops and implements training workshops, assists Member States to access nuclear data and provides technical assistance at the request of Member States. |
Role |
The Nuclear Physicist: (1) as programme developer and implementer, provides input to the planning and formulation of the IAEA's programme in the fields of nuclear structure and decay, nuclear reactions, theoretical models and medical data applications; (2) as technical expert, carries out calculations and evaluations leading to the production of databases and data files and provides technical coordination of work carried out by Member States; (3) as technical and project officer, promotes, coordinates and evaluates moderately complex CRPs in the area of nuclear data. |
Partnerships |
The Nuclear Physicist engages counterparts in other international and national nuclear data centres and Member States' institutions for the implementation of nuclear data activity and consults with staff in other departments on the Section's activities. He/she participates in meetings with Member State representatives and with advisory groups to identify needs and respond to the interests of Member States regarding nuclear physics and data. The Nuclear Physicist works closely with appropriate technical departments within the IAEA, Member States' institutions and other relevant international organizations to ensure the effective implementation of nuclear data activities. |

Remuneration |
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $67 483 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $42 447*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave,pension plan and health insurance.
