Radio Comedy produces 170 hours of output a year on Radio 4, Radio 2 and 4Extra including award-winning programmes like The Now Show, The News Quiz, Newsjack, ElvenQuest, Mark Watson Live, Mark Steel’s In Town, Party, The New Comedy Awards and dozens of other shows featuring top name comedians. Radio Comedy plays a critical part in helping the BBC to find fresh comedy voices.
We work closely with the BBC TV Comedy department with a view to programme ideas and talent making the transition from Radio to TV. Recent commissions on this basis include Miranda Hart, Jason Byrne’s Father Figure and I’ve Never Seen Star Wars.
You will be required to generate creative ideas, treatments and formats of the highest standards, consistent with Radio Comedy’s editorial needs. Beyond this, working on existing productions and strands, you will also realise these ideas in production through communication, direction and editorial judgement.
Experience in radio comedy production and proven ability to originate and develop ideas is critical. You will also have strong organisational and communication skills combined with knowledge of both writers and performers. Furthermore you will have knowledge of a broad range of comedy and a keen awareness of the needs of audiences.
You will demonstrate a proven ability to manage budgets and have a general understanding of copyright law, Writers Guild agreements, contracts and the legal implications of the production process. Ideally you will also have experience of working in a multi-platform environment and have the ability to quickly assimilate detailed information.
