Stockholm University has been offering academic courses in Portuguese since 1961. At the Dept of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin America Studies, research and education is conducted in all three subject areas. The Dept has professorships in Ibero-Roman lggs, Latin America Studies, Spanish, and Portuguese. The Professorship in Portuguese was established in 2005.
The staff of the Department amounts to 50 employees. The department admits more than 700 students yearly, of which about 200 study Portuguese. Three graduate students are currently pursuing their PhD in Portuguese.
Our research pertains to the areas of syntax, semantics, lexicology, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, language contact and intercultural communication, as well as literature studies on the historical novel.
Responsibilities: The professor is expected to conduct research – including planning and managing of research – teach and supervise students at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. The professor is also expected to participate in internal activities, and to accept administrative assignments. Furthermore, the professor is expected to initiate research projects, and actively pursue external research funding, as well as to stay updated on developments of the research subject and university education. In addition, the professor is expected to establish contacts outside of the department, as well as representing Portuguese as a research area.
Qualification requirements: Applicants should present documented evidence of their research expertise and teaching ability within the field of Portuguese.
Scientific skills should be at professor level in Portuguese linguistics. Demonstrated excellent skills in spoken and written Portuguese is required. The applicant must also demonstrate a good command in Swedish or another Nordic language, required for cooperation in the department, faculty, university, and society at large. Alternatively, the applicant is expected to acquire such a command within the initial two years of employment.
The applicant must show the ability to collaborate, and that he/she has the necessary background to perform satisfactorily the duties of the position.
Assessment criteria: In the appointment process special emphasis will be paid to scientific skills and teaching proficiency, which will be weighted equally. Assessment of scientific proficiency will primarily focus on merits within the subject area of the position. Importance is given also administrative skills, including proven management skills, and the ability to interact with the wider community and the ability to communicate research and development results. Successful supervision of students at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels is considered as part of scientific skills and teaching proficiency.
Competence in Portuguese literature is an advantage. Documented scientific expertise in other Romance languages is desirable.
Teaching and learning theory: Higher education teaching theory, or corresponding knowledge obtained in another manner, is to be given credit. Candidates lacking formal advanced education in teaching theory, corresponding to a minimum of 7.5 higher education credits, and who are judged not in possession of corresponding teaching skills, must pursue such studies during the first two years of employment.
Note that a maximum of 10 scientific papers will be submitted for assessment. .
