Advocacy Manager For U.S. Legal Program

Background:

Founded in 1992, the Center for Reproductive Rights (the Center) is a non-profit organization that promotes women’s equality worldwide by securing reproductive rights in constitutional and international human rights law.
The Center is accepting applications for the position of Advocacy Manager in the U.S. Legal Program. The Advocacy Manager will be responsible for managing and implementing the Center’s advocacy strategies that aim to build capacity of state partners, expand access to reproductive health care, and protect reproductive rights across the states.  The position reports directly to the Director of State Policy & Advocacy.

Responsibilities of the Advocacy Manager will include:

  • Managing and implementing new proactive campaigns aimed at building capacity and promoting advocacy and policy opportunities for local advocates;
  • Conducting outreach and alliance building with state and local advocates;
  • Representing the Center at coalition meetings and with clients and ally organizations;
  • Working closely with the communications team to promote an integrated approach to advocacy;
  • Participating in events such as coalition meetings, mobilization events, policy-related activities in various states;
  • Assisting in the development and drafting of reports and advocacy materials;
  • Engaging in public speaking and other representation of the Center at external events such as conferences and coalition meetings;
  • Assisting in the supervision of the work of fellows, associates, assistants, and interns; and
  • Supporting the State Policy and Advocacy Director on program, managerial, and operational matters as needed.

Candidate Requirements:

While no one person will possess all of the qualities listed below, the ideal candidate would have the following professional and personal characteristics:
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working on advocacy, policy and/or organizing.
  • Excellent writing and communications skills.
  • Experience with reproductive rights issues or a familiarity with other issues relating to women’s equality, human rights, civil rights, or racial and social justice issues is highly desirable.
  • A commitment to women’s reproductive rights.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in relevant area a plus.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work independently, while also collaborating in a team setting.
  • The ability to complete assignments in a timely manner, often under considerable time pressure, and to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Understanding and appreciation of different and opposing perspectives, and the ability to adapt approaches as the requirements of a situation change.
  • Professionalism, excellent judgment, strong writing and public speaking skills.
