Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an Associate to provide administrative and clerical assistance to the Development and Outreach Department in the Amsterdam office.  This position reports to the Netherlands Director of Development. 
The Amsterdam office is responsible for all Human Rights Watch events in the Netherlands.  Its core activity is fundraising (development) and some activities related to advocacy.  The Associate will support the staff of the office in all their undertakings.  The primary work of this Associate will be related to fundraising with a special emphasis on relationships with private donors and foundations.
Responsibilities:
1. Assisting with the organization and coordination of logistics for special events in the Netherlands, such as meetings, (fundraising) events and annual dinners;
2. Overseeing preparation of marketing and event related materials;
3. Managing the administration of  all gifts; processing, tracking and acknowledging gifts using HRW’s Raiser’s Edge database; ensuring accurate and timely recording of all, gifts, contact information and providing reports when necessary;
4. Responding to requests for information and corresponding with donors, foundations, friends and partners, including the creation of mailings;
5. Providing support including scheduling internal and external meetings, creating agendas, preparing background materials, drafting minutes and conducting follow-up meetings;
6. Coordinating and managing the development of content for newsletters, mailings, programs, presentations;
7. Assisting with departmental hiring and training and overseeing departmental interns;
8. Processing expenses, answering phones and emails and processing incoming development mail;
9. Assisting with travel arrangements and follow-up;
10. Maintaining extensive files, contact lists and databases;
11. Performing tasks including filing, photocopying, scanning, faxing, word processing, maintaining databases, maintaining contact lists and subscriptions, bulk mailings, report filing and tracking; and
12. Carrying out other duties as required
Qualifications:
Education: A bachelor’s degree, preferably in marketing, communications, business administration, nonprofit management, law,  international relations, fundraising or other related field is required.
Experience:Prior administrative or office experience in a demanding and fast paced environment is required. 
Related Skills and Knowledge: 
1. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Dutch are required.
2. Strong interpersonal skills, energy and attention to details are required.
3. Strong organizational, administrative and financial skills are required.
4. Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously is required.
5. Ability to take initiative, prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team is required.
6. Experience in fundraisingis desirable.
7. Good judgment, discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality are essential.
8. Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications is required.
9. Strong interest in international human rights is desirable.
10. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
Other: Applicants for this position must possess current Dutch work authorization valid for a minimum of two years from start date.
