Human Rights Fellow For U.S. Legal Program

Background:

Founded in 1992, the Center for Reproductive Rights (the Center) is a non-profit organization that promotes women’s equality worldwide by securing reproductive rights in constitutional and international human rights law.
The Center is accepting applications for the position of Human Rights Fellow in the U.S. Legal Program. The Human Rights Fellow will be responsible for assisting in the implementation of U.S.-based human rights and other advocacy work in the State Policy and Advocacy Program. The Human Rights Fellow will report directly to the Human Rights Counsel.

Responsibilities of the Human Rights Fellow will include:

  • Conducting fact-gathering projects in the U.S. in support of advocacy efforts;
  • Conducting legal and factual research and analysis to support advocacy in U.S. and with UN bodies;
  • Drafting advocacy materials on reproductive rights issues for U.S. audiences that incorporate a human rights analysis;
  • Contributing to the development of international human rights norms concerning reproductive rights as well as domestic implementation of these standards;
  • Drafting legal submissions to human rights experts and treaty bodies, including complaints, urgent appeals, shadow letters, and responses to requests for information;
  • Assisting more senior staff with developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including reproductive justice organizations, immigrant and human rights groups, and other domestic constituencies; federal and state policy makers; and international and regional human rights experts;
  • Engaging in public speaking and other representation of the Center at external events such as conferences and coalition meetings;
  • Participating in organizational meetings;
  • Supervising the work of legal interns and administrative assistants.

Candidate Requirements:

While no one person will possess all of the qualities listed below, the ideal candidate would have the following professional and personal characteristics:
  • JD; LLB or LLM in international law;
  • Knowledge of international and regional human rights law and mechanisms;
  • At least 1-2 years post-graduate experience with human rights advocacy, preferably as applied to the United States;
  • Prior experience in women’s rights; reproductive health, rights or justice; or civil rights a strong plus;
  • Experience integrating human rights strategies into a broader advocacy campaign including litigation, policy and media strategies a strong plus;
  • Strong legal research and writing skills;
  • Strong collaborative skills and ability to work with diverse actors and constituencies (e.g. across race, culture, nationality, economic and social class, and within legal, policy, and activist circles);
  • Fluency in spoken and written Spanish highly preferred;
  • Some domestic and possibly international travel required.
