Human Rights Watch is seeking a Web Editor/Research Assistant to provide assistance to its China team.  This position reports to the China Director based in Washington, DC.
Responsibilities:
1. Provide research, administrative and logistical support to the China team by assisting with research and analysis;
2. Assist with Chinese-English and English-Chinese translations and vet translated documents and interviews;
3. Coordinate the translation process; source and liaise with translators;
4. Maintain files, press contact lists, subscribers contact list and databases;
5. Maintain HRW’s Chinese website;
6. Maintain and grow the Chinese language presence in social media on Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Weibo accounts;
7. Liaise with Chinese-language press contacts and distribute HRW’s Chinese material to the press and subscribers;
8. Assist with the preparation of documents, briefing papers and press releases;
9. Draft and edit correspondence and other documents;
10. Retrieve and respond to requests for information; and
11. Perform other tasks, as may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:  A bachelor’s degree in international relations, law, journalism, social sciences or studies relating to the country relevant to the function is required.
Experience:Minimum three years of experience working in an office environment or assisting with research and/or translations is highly desirable.
Related Skills and Knowledge: 
1. Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English and Chinese are required.
2. Proven track record as a writer and/or editor is required.
3. Ability to express ideas clearly and logically is required.
4. One year experience as a social media manager preferred, please provide twitter handle, experience with a Content Management System is also preferred.
5. Ability to function under pressure, prioritize competing demands with minimal supervision and handle numerous tasks simultaneously.
6. Flexibility in responding quickly to events as they occur and producing excellent written material under tight deadlines is required.
7. Demonstrated ability to work well both independently as well as part of a team.
8. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required.
9. Strong initiative and follow-through, the capacity to think creatively and strategically are required.
10. Experience working for an international human rights organization in a support function and knowledge about human rights and international affairsis highly desirable.
11. Experience with a wire service, newspaper, or online journalism site or other news organization is desirable.

Contract Duration:  Initial fixed term contract through June 2015.  Renewable depending on the availability of continued funding.
