Background:

Lawyers Without Borders Canada (LWBC) is a non-governmental international development organisation, whose mission is to support the defence of human rights for the most vulnerable groups and individuals, through the reinforcement of access to justice and legal representation.
LWBC seeks to contribute to the defence and promotion of human rights, uphold the rule of law, fight against impunity, reinforce the security and independence of human rights lawyers, support the holding of fair trials, and contribute to the continuing education of stakeholders within the justice system, as well as members of civil society.

Position Description:

The intern:
  • Does legal research related to specific cases of serious human rights abuses;
  • Analyzes legal issues and writes arguments for ONIC lawyers;
  • Takes part in meetings with various stakeholders involved in cases at bar (lawyers, representatives of the attorney general's office, victims and so on);
  • Attends hearings related to cases at bar;
  • Helps to write amicus curiae briefs;
  • Writes articles about Colombia's justice system and the realities of vulnerable communities.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in law, international law or international penal law;
  • Good knowledge of the inter-American human rights system;
  • Good oral and written communication in Spanish (French or English is an asset);
  • Good writing skills;
  • Good organizational and planning skills;
  • Good degree of professionalism;
  • Ability to work as a member of a team;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Ability to grasp and understand the cultural differences and socio-economic realities of a fragile or crisis state;
  • Ability to quickly assimilate domestic law concepts to harmonize them with knowledge of national or international law;
  • Interest in promoting and defending human rights generally, and especially the rights of indigenous peoples;
  • Adherence to LWBC's principles and values. Eligibility requirements
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • Have graduated from a degree or diploma program from a university, college, post secondary school of technology, post secondary institute or a CEGEP;
  • Between the ages of 19 and 30;
  • Be unemployed or underemployed and not attending school;
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
