Director of Casework - Bangalore, India
International Justice Mission (IJM) is a global human rights organization that secures justice for victims of bonded labour, sex trafficking, and other forms of violent oppression. IJM Bangalore was established in 2006. The office is dedicated to securing the rescue and restoration of bonded labourers in the Bangalore region, to bringing perpetrators to account through the criminal justice system, and to bringing about sustainable transformation within the public justice system so that it works effectively for victims of bonded labour.
The Need
IJM’s Bangalore office is seeking a Director of Casework to lead its three casework teams (Investigations, Legal and Aftercare) in working alongside the public justice system to bring rescue, relief and restoration to victims of bonded labour, and accountability for bonded labour perpetrators in the Bangalore region.
The Director of Casework will provide strategic direction for the office’s on-the-ground casework and direct interventions, and will be responsible for guiding the three teams to meet specific targets designed to generate maximum impact in this field. The success of our mission of rescue, restoration and transformation is entirely dependent on the committed, proficient, consistent and diligent work of the casework departments, and these must be ably led.
The role involves high-level leadership, requiring proactive problem-solving, leadership development, and a commitment to the success of IJM’s mission in Bangalore. As a key leader in the office, the Director of Casework must represent the organization with a high level of professionalism and competence, and provide holistic leadership within the office.
This position is based in Bangalore and reports to the Field Office Director, IJM Bangalore.
Responsibilities
Leadership and Management
- Overall leadership and management relating to the operations of the casework projects;
- Direct supervision the Directors of the Investigations, Legal and Aftercare departments;
- Lead the casework teams to success and proven impact in the field, ensuring appropriate strategies are implemented to enable each team to meet its yearly targets;
- Oversee planning and execution of all victim rescue operations;
- Oversee recruitment and make hiring and promotion recommendations to the FOD for all casework staff positions;
- Lead rescue operations and (if needed) prosecutions by serving as a complainant or witness;
- Draft annual budgets for the casework project;
- Draft monthly reports on progress toward targets, obstacles encountered and key developments; and
- Carry out an additional portfolio of assignments given by the Director.
Coordination and Communication
- Participate in office-wide leadership and collaborate closely with the Director of Structural Transformation and other departments;
- Coordinate with Structural Transformation project staff on training programs and ensure proper participation by the casework staff in advocacy and capacity building work;
- Build rapport with key government officials to ensure that casework project proceeds successfully;
- Advocate with the government officials during rescue operations to ensure smooth legal procedure; and
- Sustain and build key relationships with government and civil society leaders in South India.

Required Skills and Experience
- Master’s degree in Management, Social Work, Social Sciences, or related field preferred;
- At least four years’ progressive experience in an NGO environment preferred, though not mandatory;
- At least five years’ experience in managing a team, including project management and leadership development;
- Extensive exposure and experience working with government-funded programs as well as those funded by private institutions and foundations;
- Systems building and systems thinking skills and well developed conceptual thinking skills;
- High level advocacy and communications skills; and
- Ability to work proficiently with all Microsoft software.

- This position requires frequent internal travel across the different project areas and field offices in India;
- Travel for meetings, cases, trainings and conferences.
