Analyst: System Operation Performance

Ofgem is committed to making a positive difference for energy consumers through effective regulation of the market and close working with suppliers to ensure sustainable energy for consumers and businesses in the UK.
This role will see you monitoring the performance of electricity and gas system operators within the energy wholesale market and setting incentives that encourage responsible, economic and efficient market practices. Your economic analysis skills will be key in evaluating systems operators’ performance and making recommendations on the most effective incentives to promote the best interests of consumers. Your market knowledge will also be a valuable resource in setting policies that are closely aligned to current industry practice. It’s important that you can offer excellent communication skills, ensuring effective sharing of information and knowledge across Ofgem and contributing to a range of reports, presentations and correspondence. You’ll also play an important part in engaging stakeholders within the energy industry and in government such as the National Grid and DECC.
Essential qualifications:
  • 2:1 degree or better in economics, engineering or other relevant analytical subject
Essential skills and experience:
  • Experience in analysing quantitative and qualitative information to support conclusions
  • The ability to effectively communicate and synthesise analysis for managers and other internal stakeholders, both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, think creatively and work independently
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team and to contribute to and support a sustainable, high-performing team environment
  • Demonstration of meeting challenging deadlines and managing multiple priorities
Desirable:
  • Academic or working experience of regulatory or competition economics in a commercial, consulting or public sector environment
  • An understanding of the operation of energy markets, and the ability to build and maintain detailed knowledge of particular areas of relevance to your work
  • Theoretical or applied knowledge of basic principles of econometrics and/or economic modelling
