CHIEF RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIST IN SOUTH AFRICA

DIABETES DISCOVERY PLATFORM, PAROW

SENIOR/CHIEF RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIST
(5-year contract)

A cost-to-company remuneration package R176 000 to R222 000 (Senior Research Technologist) and R230 000 to R305 000 (Chief Research Technologist) will be negotiated in accordance with qualifications and experience.

The Diabetes Discovery Platform is a dynamic research group within the Medical Research Council. The platform has two main focus areas: the effect of diet and lifestyle on the development of type 2 diabetes and the investigation of indigenous plant extracts for effective treatment and control of the disease.

The group is looking for a competent and goal-orientated individual for the position of Senior/Chief Research Technologist.

Senior Research Technologists are responsible for:

  • • Conducting in vitro and in vivo research in the field of diabetes and drug discovery
  • • Perform laboratory based assays relevant to diabetes research
  • • Conduct work according to GLP guidelines
  • • Data recording and reporting of work performed
  • • General laboratory management
  • • Conduct experimental procedures in consultation with Chief Technologists/Research Manager or Scientists.


Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • • At least a 3 year Diploma in Medical Technology or a related field with a minimum of 2 years’ relevant laboratory experience
  • • Additional certification in the ethical use and care of laboratory animals will be an advantage
  • • Experience in animal husbandry and working with animal models in diabetic research
  • • Experience in tissue culture and cell based assays
  • • Experience in histology, immunocytochemistry and image analysis
  • • Research planning and time management skills
  • • Communication and writing skills
  • • Independent and lateral thinking abilities
  • • Computer literacy
  • • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.


Chief Research Technologists are responsible for:

  • • Conducting in vitro and in vivo research in the field of diabetes and drug discovery
  • • Perform laboratory based assays relevant to diabetes research
  • • Conduct work according to GLP guidelines
  • • Data recording, reporting and presentation of research
  • • General laboratory management
  • • Co-ordinate and plan experimental procedures in consultation with Scientists.


Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • • At least a 4 year B.Tech. Degree in Medical Technology or a related field with a minimum of 10 years’ relevant laboratory experience
  • • Additional certification in the ethical use and care of laboratory animals will be an advantage
  • • Experience in animal husbandry and working with animal models in diabetic research
  • • Experience in tissue culture and cell based assays
  • • Experience in histology, immunocytochemistry and image analysis
  • • Project management, research planning and time management skills
  • • Communication and writing skills
  • • Independent and lateral thinking abilities
  • • Computer literacy
  • • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
