POSITION DESCRIPTION

City Seasonal Aids (CSAs) will assist at the Rockaway Beach Endangered Species Nesting Area to monitor and protect the piping plovers and perform community outreach. The RBESNA is a section of beach approximately 1 mile long (20 city blocks) and about 1 block wide. It is home to Piping Plovers, Least and Common Terns, and American Oyster Catchers that nest in the area. Additionally there are a wide number of migratory birds that stop to use the site as a safe haven while on migration in both the spring and fall. Besides the main RBESNA site, there are anywhere from 2-5 satellite sites where plovers have nested outside the main site. NYC Parks is mandated by federal (Endangered Species Act) and state law to provide protection for the piping plover, a New York State Endangered and Federally threatened species. CSAs will work weekends and holidays during the season and be part of the Wildlife Crew that is responsible for site construction and maintenance, monitoring and protecting birds, nests, and chicks, constructing exclosures, identifying and securing satellite sites, and performing education programs.

• $94.25 Processing fee required for finger printing and background check.

• Must pass background check

• Seasonal employees must purchase their own uniform

PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

• Outgoing personality. Good physical condition.

• Ability to juggle and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

• Wildlife monitoring experience.

• Ability to work in the sun for long periods of time.

• Experience working with animals.

• Knowledge of beach ecosystem.

• Ability to plan and lead public educational programs.
