Radio Communications Assistant

This post is a United Nations Department of Safety & Security (UNDSS) assignment. Under the direct supervision of the Senior Operations Officer (SOO) and the overall guidance of the Chief Security Adviser (CSA), Security Adviser (SA) or the Field Security Coordination Officer (FSCO), the incumbent is expected to do the following:

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as Radio room supervisor under the Senior Operations Officer, UNDSS;
  • Assisting in ensuring the establishment and maintenance of a functioning Emergency Communications System (ECS) for the country;
  • Assisting in the installation, maintenance and utilization of the common UN communication system, as appropriate;
  • Assisting in developing, implementing and supervising a radio communication monitoring mechanism and conducting routine radio checks, as appropriate;
  • Ensuring radio communication training is provided to drivers, wardens, Security Management Team (SMT) members and others as required;
  • Establishing and maintaining communication links with Designated Officer (DO), SMT, Area Security Coordinators, and others in the region and “safe havens”;
  • Other security related tasks assigned by the SOO/CSA/SA/FSCO.

Competencies

  • Capable of programming, installing, repairing (trouble shooting) and maintaining UN VHF and HF communications devices -- hand-held, vehicle mounted and facility;
  • Capable of installing UN VHF and HF antennae and repeater systems;
  • Capable of advising the UN Security Officer and heads of agency concerning the maintenance and utilization of UN VHF and HF communications systems;
  • Capable of teaching classes in the English language to UN staff concerning UN radio/telephone communications procedures;
  • Capable of installing vehicle anti-theft devices;
  • Familiar with UN computer software;
  • Familiar with UN VSAT systems;
  • Generally familiar with common electronic and electrical systems;
  • Capable of attending telecommunications training classes — to furtherance of capabilities;
  • Capable of working without close supervision;
  • Possessing a strong work ethic;
  • Capable of reading, writing and speaking the English language well;
  • Capable of writing technical reports in the English language;
  • Must be fully computer literate;
  • Capable of working in austere and potentially hazardous environments;
  • Must be willing to travel locally and internationally, if required.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • Post secondary diploma in radio communication or equivalent qualification from military/police institute or on job training on the subject for at least two years.
Work Experience:
  • At least three years experience in radio communication field in the military/police. Experience in the UN communication system will be highly preferable.
Language:
  • Fluency in English and Arabic languages.
