Standards & Certification Manager

The UTZ Standards & Certification Department is responsible for developing and continuously improving the sustainability criteria for coffee, tea and cocoa UTZ CERTIFIED stands for as well as development and revision of Chain of Custody requirements. The department manages the UTZ CERTIFIED certification programs for coffee, tea and cocoa (and new products) and participates in UTZ’s monitoring and evaluation / impact assessment activities.

UTZ voluntary standards are developed in a transparent, credible and balanced multi-stakeholder approach, and they are regularly being revised. Both auditing and certification is done by accredited external bodies.

You have an excellent overview over production realities and issues and of sustainability certification in coffee, cocoa and tea. You identify trends and needs with major stakeholders and translate them into the UTZ CERTIFIED programs. You lead a team of six professionals who manage the diverse commodity and content areas, ensuring consistent and top quality output, optimal workflow, adequate capacity and personal development. You support the Standards Director with defining the standards strategy and with external representation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Management of UTZ CERTIFIED’s Codes (sustainability criteria) and revision processes
  • Management of UTZ CERTIFIED’s Chain of Custody and revision processes
  • Quality management of certification program
  • Coordination of UTZ CERTIFIED’s Standards Committee
  • Definition and coordination of department activities and roles, definition and monitoring of KPI’s
  • Line management of Standards & Certification team (six persons)
  • Development and implementation of the department’s budget
  • Fundraising and reporting assistance
  • Project Management, interdepartmental collaboration
  • Internal and external representation and cooperation

The Standards and Certification Manager reports to the Standards Director.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

  • MSc in agronomy/tropical agriculture, environmental science, international development or related field
  • Excellent knowledge of auditing practices and standard systems in sustainable tropical agriculture, smallholder production systems and multi-stakeholder processes
  • Good understanding of sustainability topics and challenges and the various needs and interests in market dynamics of commodity supply chains
  • Good, experienced team leader
  • Work experience in tropical countries and in the development sector
  • Result oriented, analytical and both overview and a good eye for detail
  • Fluency in verbal and written English, preferably good knowledge of Spanish and/or one or more other relevant languages (Portuguese, French, Vietnamese)
  • Minimum 7 years of work experience, minimum 5 years in a closely related field, preferably work experience with a certification body

Employment is based upon minimum 32 hours/week (UTZ prefers full time = 40 hours/week). The position is based in Amsterdam and implies incidental to regular travel abroad. We can only consider candidates who have a work & residency permit for the Netherlands/EU.
