Legal Advisor

Location: Johannesburg, South Africa
Base salary GB£36,035 per annum negotiable, relocation support will be provided for relocation within the South
The Directorate of Finance and Operations is seeking to recruit a Legal Advisor that will provide legal counsel and services, in consultation with legal firms and the Head of Governance, to enable AAI to carry out its mission in compliance with applicable laws and at an acceptable level of legal risk. Key responsibilities for this role include:
· Assess legal risks of AAI and develop a Legal Framework and action plan to address significant risk;
· Establish and manage relationships with legal firms;
· Develop procedures and monitor compliance of legal and tax requirements of AAI activities;
· Support Affiliation processes and growth agenda on legal requirements and risks;
· Protect the ActionAid Trademark and manage Security and Data Protection activities;
· Support development of legal capacity of AAI Staff involved in contracts;
· Deal with financial matters, including banking arrangements, insurance arrangements and procurement issues.
Desired Skills & Experience
Formally, you should be a qualified Attorney, with a minimum of 5 years’ post qualification experience as an Attorney in an international environment and in different legal jurisdictions with different legal systems (both common law and civil law). You must have a solid foundation in fundamental legal theories, coupled with the ability to identify problems and legal issues. You will preferably also have knowledge of/and or experience of the Not For Profit, NGO and/or Development sectors and be able to demonstrate sensitivity in and exposure to cross-cultural situations. Strong research skills are a must.
The successful candidate will have the ability to manage relationships at all levels, possess excellent negotiation skills and will demonstrate excellent communication skills (fluent spoken and written English). In this position, you must have the ability to think strategically, to prioritise competing demands and to influence a peer group, Board Committees and International Board. Coupled with this will be your experience in dealing with outside counsel and general knowledge of international affairs.
On a personal level, the incumbent will have the ability to work independently and be self-motivated and to accommodate considerable travel demands. You must have a strong Commitment to ActionAid’s vision, mission values and way of working.
