In Australia, AGA operates the Sunrise Dam Gold Mine in WA and is developing the Tropicana Gold Mine, also in WA, in which it has a 70% interest and is manager. Independence Group holds the remaining 30%. Tropicana, which represents the most significant Australian gold discovery for the last decade, is scheduled to begin production in the December quarter of 2013.

Located in the Laverton region, AngloGold Ashanti Australia's Sunrise Dam is one of Western Australia's premier gold mines. This open pit and underground operation employs more than 600 people and produces approximately 350,000 oz of gold per annum. Operating on an attractive 8/6 fly-in fly-out roster, Sunrise Dam boasts excellent accommodation and facilities.

We are now seeking a committed Geology Technician to join our Open Pit Geology team at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine. This is a fixed term contract for 6 months with many opportunities.

Accountable to the Senior Geology Technician, this role is accountable for assisting Exploration Geologists and other members of the Geology Department (eg Mine Geologists) by performing routine tasks associated with diamond core and RC sampling, and assisting with the management and supervision of drilling contractors. The role may also involve assisting with grade control activities including sample collection, ore mark-out, spotting and other general duties as required

The main tasks of the role include:

  • Ensure personal compliance with company safety requirements, including regular attendance at safety meetings, and assist in developing improved work practices to reduce the risk of injury and improve productivity.
  • Be fully conversant with and comply with geological working procedures. Assist in the development, maintenance and documentation of these procedures.
  • Assist Geologists in supervising drilling contractors and coordinating the movements of these operators, including drill site preparation and rehabilitation.
  • Provide drilling contractors with correctly numbered sample bags and consumables, coordinate the purchase of consumables via the stores department, assist the contractors in the sampling process, coordinate the submission and dispatch of samples to the laboratory. Collect quality control information and other data as required for monitoring drilling performance.
  • Diamond core processing, including mark-up, orientation, photography, SG measurement, magnetic susceptibility measurement, core cutting and storage.
  • Assist surveyors as required, and be proficient in the basic operation of survey equipment.
  • Data entry of drill hole and sample data using a variety of Windows based software packages.
  • Cleaning and preventative maintenance of Geology Department vehicles.
  • Other duties as required. Activities involving Geological Technicians e.g. core processing and ore spotting are sometimes carried out on both day shift and night shift, so a shift work roster may be a requirement of this position.
