WFP Chief P5, Medical Service

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. We are currently seeking to fill the position of Chief, Medical Service at P5 level, based at our Headquarters in Rome, Italy. The selected candidate will support a global staffing presence and may be required to travel to any of WFP’s field based locations.

Responsibilities Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the Chief of Medical Service will be responsible for the following duties:

Clinical and Occupational Health:

  • Undertake day-to-day clinical duties, including walk-in-clinic, emergencies, pre-placement and periodic medical examinations, immunizations, etc;
  • Establish collaboration with hospitals, clinics and outside specialists and refer staff as necessary;
  • Provide health education and promotion programs;
  • Organize and participate in addressing work environment and occupational health issues;
  • Assess extent to which illnesses, injuries or death is service incurred;
  • Approve and coordinate administration of medical clearances, sick leave and medical evacuations.

Medico Administrative:

  • Manage the medical activities and administrative functions of the Medical Service Unit and supervise staff;
  • Collaborate closely with Chief Medical Officers of other UN agencies and international organisations to identify and harmonise best practices;
  • Represent WFP in the UN Medical Directors Working Group;
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications & Experience Required

Education:

  • Doctorate (MD) or equivalent in Medicine, including residency in one of the medical specialities, preferably internal medicine. Current registration to practice medicine in own country or another UN member state is required.

Experience:

  • At least 11 years of postgraduate progressively responsible clinical experience as a Medical Doctor/ Practitioner including at least 5 years in the occupational health field;
  • Administrative experience in the medical field including budgeting, supervisory responsibility and resource management;
  • Experience in emergency management (emergency/disaster medicine), travel medicine, tropical and infectious diseases is desirable;
  • Previous UN system/ international medical experience is desirable.

Competencies:

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing on a wide range of issues;
  • Ability to effectively interact and work with colleagues within a multicultural environment;
  • Ability to lead and motivate a medical team and effectively manage resources;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with different units and colleagues to achieve organizational goals;
  • Professional competence and knowledge of clinical medicine and relevant operations, procedures and requirements for treating patients.

Language:

  • Working knowledge of English and intermediate knowledge of another UN official language (Arabic, French, Spanish, Russian or Chinese) or Portuguese as a WFP working language;
  • Intermediate knowledge of Italian is highly desirable.
