Computer Programmer, Optometry

Assists a principal investigator and her research team with all computer programming needs in order to support research projects that assess the mobility, balance, and street-crossing performance of normally-sighted and visually impaired people. 

Designs, develops, documents, and maintains new and existing custom hardware and software to collect, process, analyze, and store research data related to mobility, balance, and street-crossing experiments. Provides advice to the principal investigator and her research team on experimental design, instruction in the use of programs, data analysis, and troubleshooting.

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related subject and three years of software and hardware development that includes software coding utilizing languages such as Java, including Java embedded programming, Matlab, SQL, and other database applications for a wide variety of computers: PCs, micro-controllers and hand-held devices and sensors. 

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. 

Experience with and knowledge of the following: Java, Java embedded programming and using Eclipse; Matlab and database applications such as SQL; and serial and USB port communications for PC computers. Experience developing real-time control of electronic and mechanical devices for process control and data collection that must be tightly synchronized. Experience developing analysis software for large sets of data collected by electronic and/or mechanical devices, custom-written, and web-based programs. 

Good verbal and written communication skills; ability to work independently as well as part of a team; and self-motivated with the ability to meet deadlines.
