Every Mother Counts (EMC) is a campaign to end preventable deaths caused by pregnancy and childbirth around the world. Every Mother Counts informs, engages, and mobilizes new audiences to take action to improve the health and well being of girls and women worldwide. Every Mother Counts is still a young organization with a small office in New York and is currently transitioning from our Washington, DC office to Boston, MA. This position will be based out of our Boston location ideally under the supervision of the Executive Director and Director of Communications and Engagement.
The Director of Business Development and Partnerships will develop and maintain relationships with corporate and institutional partners to benefit Every Mother Counts, with the goal of increasing awareness of the Every Mother Counts campaign and mobilizing resources through our relationships with these partners. The Director will be responsible for identifying, establishing and maintaining relationships with partners and for ensuring successful partnerships that make a meaningful contribution to EMC’s mission. This candidate must have proven experience in working with the private sector, negotiating and maintaining corporate relationships and must have excellent project management and communication skills.

Responsibilities:

  • In consultation with the EMC team, maintain (and update/refresh as necessary) EMC’s business development and partnerships strategy to help accomplish EMC’s stated goals and lead the implementation of that plan.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with partners and potential partners, and using these relationships to develop new business opportunities.
  • Oversee partnership portfolio and work to maintain equitable terms across various types of partners in terms of access to/use of EMC assets, spokespeople, use of logo, etc.
  • Negotiate terms of relationships with both corporate and media/awareness raising partners.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Communications and Engagement, work closely with corporate partners to leverage their own outreach and communications functions to raise awareness about EMC’s mission to their customer bases.
  • Develop and implement creative ideas for engaging our partners on maternal health, e.g. through campaigns, content on the EMC blog, social media.
  • Identify new opportunities for corporations and institutions to support EMC (e.g. engaging their employee bases and physical locations (both production and retail), sponsorship of EMC events, different models of engagement).
  • Work closely with EMC’s general counsel to negotiate partnership terms and draft legal agreements with partners.
  • Monitor the efficacy of EMC partnerships in raising awareness and in raising funds, including maintaining a financial prospectus in collaboration with the Portfolio Director in order to estimate and track incoming resources and thus EMC’s ability to invest across grantees.
  • In collaboration with EMC’s PR agency and the Director of Communications and Engagement, write interesting and effective press releases regarding partnerships and preparing information for media kits.
  • Reviewing and responding to partnership inquiries from interested parties in a prompt and streamlined manner.
  • Working closely with the Director of Communications and Engagement to help maintain EMC website content as it relates to partnerships.
  • Maintaining clear documentation of EMC’s partnerships approach (including guidelines, structure of partnerships) and a partnerships database that includes all past, present and future partners and contacts.
  • Taking on broader projects related to the organization’s mission as needed.

Requirements:

  • Bachelors required
  • At least 7 years experience working in business and creative development and/or branding strategy
  • Strong negotiation skills and familiarity with/comfort in negotiating contracts with corporate entities
  • Strong project management and ability to self-motivate and self-direct
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of relationship management of both corporate and institutional partners
  • Superior writing and editing skills
  • Superior critical/creative or “out of the box” thinking, communication, and relationshipbuilding skills
  • Ability to produce under pressure and tight deadlines, results-oriented
  • Ability to work in a team-based, collaborative environment
  • Ability to develop specific goals and to prioritize, organize, and accomplish those goals
  • A record for being reliable, utilizing sound judgment and responding well to adversity
  • Entrepreneurial spirit; does not mind unstructured and sometimes unpredictable environments
  • Knowledge of global maternal health and international development issues a plus and ability to communicate them and educate others in doing so
  • General interest and dedication to the mission of EMC
