Ref:
Location:London
Salary:High
Closing date:19 January 2014
MI5 helps keep the UK safe by watching for and disrupting threats to national security such as terrorism, espionage and cyber attack.
Information is the lifeblood of the organisation – and technology is constantly transforming the ways we can collate and analyse this information. So if you’re a technology professional looking for a career that offers something different, join our Architecture team and you’ll be driving some of the industry’s most innovative projects.
In all of these roles you’ll sharpen your skills working with the latest technologies and brightest minds. You’ll be immersed in fascinating and hugely important work.
As part of a pioneering IT function, you will be a key participant in the design and delivery of a variety of strategic programmes and business critical initiatives within a dynamic, challenging workplace.
In return you’ll be building one of the most stimulating and rewarding careers around, making a significant contribution towards safeguarding national security.

Solutions Architects

Are you brimming with ideas and lateral thinking? Do you have experience working with business and systems analysts and the ability to present solutions to non-technical business audiences? If your answers are yes, at MI5 you could join a team working on a wide variety of challenging business problems, producing design options and solutions that are both affordable and deliverable.
You’ll need experience in delivering solution architectures throughout a project lifecycle and the ability to demonstrate dependency and technical complexities. You may have either an application, infrastructure or data design background and ideally will have a strong blend of experience across all three. Our Solution Architects bring with them an appreciation of architecture methodologies, standards, frameworks and tools such as TOGAF, Zachman, COBIT, UL or Rational Software Modeller, but this is desirable and not absolutely essential. You will have developed technology strategies and roadmaps and produced both application and infrastructure architectures at a conceptual level.
Join us as a Solution Architect and you’ll be involved in cutting-edge, highly innovative programmes where technology plays a crucial, and increasingly strategic, role and where change and the evolution of services make the working environment both fascinating and demanding.

Enterprise Architects

As an Enterprise Architect at MI5 you will be presented with truly unique business problems, requiring broad engagement with both internal and external stakeholder groups. Our working environment offers a range of challenges and opportunities, and you’ll have the opportunity to shape and build implementable strategic architectures that drive the development of the world class capabilities needed to help protect the UK from threats to national security. Your enthusiasm for IT will be grounded in the business problems it can solve and the business edge it can enable.
You will need expertise in one or more Enterprise Architecture domains (Business, Data, Applications and Technology) and a strong understanding of how they all relate to one another to deliver the maximum business value. Your experience may have been gained in one of many market sectors, whether that is Financial Services, Security, Defence, Marketing, Analytics or elsewhere.
You’ll also have a broad awareness of business modelling process/organisation design and solutions modelling, experience in the use of industry standard architecture modelling tools, an awareness of  IS Portfolio Management and benefits management, and a practical understanding of service-based architectures.
Being up to date on emerging trends in your areas of expertise and their business implications will be vital. In addition, you will have the communication skills to engage multi-level stakeholders and exploit the opportunities they provide.
Also now hiring: Programme Design Authority Lead, Security Designers, Security Accreditors and Technology Strategists and Technical Architects
We’re also interested in hearing from potential Programme Design Authority Leads, Security Accreditors and Technology Strategists. As a Programme Design Authority Lead you’ll lead our Architecture community, providing subject matter expertise and ensuring that consistent standards are applied across a suite of cutting-edge technology portfolios.
Our Security Designers and Accreditors are a critical part of the team that develop and deliver our technical IT security policies, support and security testing programmes. They provide specialist advice and sign-off on the security of our information systems.
Our Technology Strategists form part of an interdisciplinary team that develops strategies to overcome some of the most difficult challenges faced by the organisation. You will be required to interpret our vision, objectives and mandate to deliver the capability requirements that enable our organisation to fulfil its mission.
As a Technical Architect you'll produce high level designs from solution architectures and play your part in influencing strategy requirements, solutions and roadmaps. Working with Business Analysts, your background in infrastructure, applications or data design will help you detail the appropriate design to meet the business need. You will be certified with Microsoft (MCA), CISCO (CCAr) or Oracle (Java EE or SCEA).

The recruitment process

There are four stages in the recruitment process: a review of your CV and application form, a telephone screening interview, a face-to-face interview and then a competency-based and technical second interview.
Candidates who succeed at the second interview will be made a conditional offer of employment. You will then have a security interview with a vetting officer, with a final offer of employment being made after developed vetting has been granted.
To begin your application, please complete our pre-screening questions to find out if you meet our initial criteria. You will then need to complete an application form, supply equal opportunities monitoring information and upload a copy of your CV.
We will keep you informed all the way up to final offer of employment, letting you know whether or not you’ve been successful at each stage. Timescales vary from candidate to candidate, but you can typically expect the entire process from application to second interview to take about 7-8 weeks.

Your CV

It is essential that your CV:
  • Covers the last 10 years of employment and/or education, clearly specifying job and/or course ‘from’ and ‘to’ dates in month and year detail.
  • Explains any unaccounted periods of time or holidays over a fortnight in duration over the last 10 years by specifying the dates and a brief description of what you were doing during that time.
  • Clearly demonstrates the key activities and responsibilities you have performed in each role detailed.
  • States what academic and professional qualifications you possess or are currently studying towards.
Your CV must include the above information in order for us to process your application.

Guaranteed Interview Scheme

As part of our commitment to the ‘Positive about Disabled People’ scheme we offer an interview to all candidates with a disability who meet our minimum criteria for the job vacancy that they are applying for. This is known as the Guaranteed Interview Scheme (GIS).
Along with the standard eligibility requirements for this post, your application will be assessed on how far you meet the job specification based on the information you provide in your CV. Your application must score the minimum amount of points set. On successful completion of this stage you will be invited to telephone interview.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible to apply, you must meet our residency criteria. You must be born or naturalised British citizen and one of your parents must be a British citizen or have substantial ties to the UK.
Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for nine out of the last 10 years prior to application. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. You will nonetheless be considered if you have, for example, served overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of Her Majesty’s Government, studied abroad or lived overseas with your parents.
Due to vetting requirements you will need to be 18 years old or above to apply. Your application may take around six months to process.
The Security Service is committed to reflecting both equal opportunities and the society we protect.
Owing to the sensitivity of our work, we do not publicly disclose the identities of our staff. Discretion is vital. You should not discuss your application, other than with your partner or a close family member.
