JOB TITLE: Program Director, Policy (Washington, DC)
DUTIES: Research public policy issues that impact conservation efforts in Africa. Represent AWF in high-level policy and technical dialogues with U.S. government agencies, multi-lateral development funding agencies, and African governmental organizations, including the African Union. Develop and implement a targeted legislative strategy to increase awareness of AWF’s work and role as an effective implementing partner of donor agencies. Disseminate information by writing analytical reports, scientific papers and journal articles, and by making presentations. Inform and respond to public regarding wildlife and conservation issues. Oversee AWF’s activities and best practices across its vast portfolio of projects. Provide special technical input for fisheries and freshwater conservation and management issues that informs the study of animals in their natural habitats, assessing effects of environment. Contribute to design of fish inventories and wildlife population censuses. Contributes to AWF’s science-based technical programs and AWF’s approach to African conservation issues (fish and wildlife). Make recommendations on management systems and planning for wildlife populations and habitat, including the development of sustainable fisheries. Track and coordinate AWF’s response to all U.S. government funding sources as well as emerging opportunities with multilateral institutions such as the GEF, World Bank, and UN. Represent AWF in Washington-based conservation consortiums such as the African Biodiversity Collaborative Group and the International Conservation Caucus Foundation. Field work in Africa 10%.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS: Master’s in Conservation, Applied Zoology or related field. Two years of field work in sub-Saharan Africa developing, implementing and evaluating in-country conservation policy initiatives and advising governments on the management of trans-boundary fisheries, shared watercourses and wildlife resources. Experience conducting applied fisheries management research and developing wildlife management programs required.
