Architect: Radio Software Systems South Africa

Manage and provide leadership in Engineering Software architecture and Business intelligence systems as used by Radio Access Network (RAN). Take responsibility for system performance, functionality and data integrity for RAN Software Solutions.

KPA Duties

Strategy Development • Evaluate new radio software systems and assess opportunities and concerns to be addressed from emerging radio software systems trends in conjunction with radio technology specialists • Support proposals of radio strategies for future evolution and positioning • Determine future software requirements and analysis strategies for the Radio Network department Planning & Delivery • Align software system planning with network operational functions • Assist in obtaining requirements from the Business • Ensure alignment with strategy and roadmap • Design and develop high level support and problem solving for the respective systems • Ensure appropriate software, data and mechanisms are in place with the required data integrity for the required BI analysis • Coordinate and prioritise user requirements for radio P&O group, projects and deliverables • Analyse functional system and user software and data analysis requirements for the department • Design appropriate solutions and provide development plans to satisfy these requirements in agreed priority sequence • Identify new software systems requirements for the P&O department • Support the development of new applications and new planning & optimisation tools as required by the P&O department • Support the specification and evaluation of all custom software tools developed within the Radio Technology Specialist Group • Implement part or all of the solution and ensure solutions are appropriate and meet the user requirements • Ensure update with MTN Group systems and implementations to prevent duplication and inconsistencies in the systems • Ensure input regarding development software architecture, technology and best practices • Ensure technical documentation on all work and systems in accordance to pre-defined standards and procedures Network (Software Systems) Optimisation & Performance • Ensure system performance, functionality and data integrity • Monitor existing systems and tools for effectiveness, resource utilisation, stability and performance and ensure that service levels are maintained • Provide high level support for the Planning & Optimisation Tools and Data warehouse management within P&O Department and on all developed systems • Ensure all proprietary software system upgrades within the radio P&O department • Ensure effective processes are in place for continuous improvement and feedback is in place for confirmation that software systems meet objectives Communication and co-ordination • Interface with 3rd party systems and divisions which require access to radio network data • Manage supplier relations as required to acquire tools to satisfy department requirements, where not appropriate internally • Provide expertise and recommendations regarding development software architecture, technology and best practices • Ensure co-operation with and support of other network group departments at all levels where necessary Financial Management • Continuously strive to identify and eliminate non-contributory expenditure • Ensure evaluation of the functionality and relevance of new radio software systems for a financial benefit Technology Competencies • Good knowledge of Java development, Oracle database development, Oracle PL/SQL, J2EE architecture and development, Multi-tier applications, GUI development, Web development, HTML, XML, UML and Object Oriented design and development • Knowledge of appropriate architecture and technology selection, multi-tier application design and development using appropriate programming languages and applications, user interfaces and server applications • Understanding of GSM/UMTS systems • Detailed knowledge of Information Technology trends and best practices with a basic knowledge of telecommunication system trends

Requirements

BSc. Computer Science or BSc. Elec Eng. or similar with Maths and analysis / statistics based training Recognised IT or Electronic Engineering qualification or other formal computer systems development training. Statistical analysis techniques.
Computer experience with good understanding of Computer software and hardware. Good background of statistical analysis and presentation, data storage and processing. GSM system experience is required. 2 years programming in the following. Java development, Oracle database development, Oracle PL/SQL, J2EE architecture and development, Multi-tier application design and development, application GUI development, Web development, HTML, XML, Object Oriented design and development Integration of systems, analysing system functionality and providing system interfaces. Large volume data processing, analysis and management Problem and user requirement analysis and developing solutions. Experience with UML Appropriate architecture and technology selection, multi-tier application design and development using databases and appropriate programming languages and applications, user interfaces and server applications.

Ability to conceptualise and draw out user requirements and implement a suitable solution, especially in the radio Engineering functions.
