Civil Service Title: City Park Worker (Crew Chief Assignment)

Salary: $17 per hour

Duration: This is a seasonal position beginning March 2012.

Van Cortlandt Park is New York City’s fourth largest park at 1,146 acres; 60 percent of the park is forested with over 15 miles of trails. Van Cortlandt Forest Restoration is a 10-year undertaking to provide forest management and ecological restoration to park habitats as part of a broader Bronx-wide program.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work in collaboration with the Park Administrator, Van Cortlandt Forest Restoration, Friends of Van Cortlandt Park, New York/New Jersey Trail Conference and community volunteers to implement a trails restoration plan and perform routine trails maintenance.

• Supervise, train, and motivate a small dedicated crew, teenage interns and volunteers in trail maintenance and construction projects including the following: tread and drainage, stone and timber steps, turnpikes/causeways and erosion control devices.

• Remove tree hazards and prune vegetation. Maintain trail and forest aesthetics.

•Safely operate and maintain vehicles and other equipment incidental to the performance of duties.

• Maintain records and prepare written reports regarding personnel issues. Develop and oversee inventory management of tools, equipment and supplies.

• Interact with staff and the public in a courteous and professional manner.

• Ensure compliance with appropriate Parks rules and regulations.



QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

1. A Motor Vehicle Driver's License valid in the State of New York is required.

2. Ability to read and to understand and obey orders is required.

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required for all other candidates within

90 days of employment.

PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

1. Experience in trail maintenance and construction, including the installation of stone and timber steps and

erosion control devices.

2. Experience in arboriculture, including pruning and felling hazardous trees.

3. Knowledge of hand and power tool use and care.

4. Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.

5. Strong leadership skills and a proven track record in supervising trail crews.

6. Ability to perform heavy physical labor in a wide range of terrain and weather conditions.
