The Greenbelt is one of New York City’s flagship parks located in Staten Island. The Greenbelt Administration, in partnership with the Greenbelt Conservancy, oversees or coordinates the management of over 2,800 acres of natural areas including over 35 miles of hiking trails, traditional parks, a 5,440 square-foot state-of-the-art Nature Center, an Environmental Education Department, a Natural Resources Department, Native Plant Center Propagation Nursery and Demonstration Garden.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Under general supervision, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, coordinate and carry out activities that are part of ongoing environmental projects in the Greenbelt.
• Coordinate in research, collection of information, data entry and analysis relevant to the Greenbelt Administration’s efforts to assess and restore the natural ecosystem.
• Work with community groups to increase environmental stewardship.
• Coordinate with management and staff in the preparation of grant proposals, work plans as well as other documentation for environmental projects.
• Provide support for presentations and written reports.
• Prepare and update spreadsheets, correspondence, maps and reports documenting the status of projects.
• Serve as a liaison for the Greenbelt to other Parks divisions, private organizations and other city, state and municipal agencies.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

1. High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered
activities in an area related to duties described above; or

2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” above.


PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS


1. Bachelor of Science in ecology, natural resources or in the natural sciences.
2. Experience in scientific research and/or fieldwork relating to natural areas assessment and inventory.
3. Knowledgeable of native and non-native plant species of the Northeast
4. Proficient in using computer software including Microsoft Access.
5. Knowledgeable in operating GIS (ESRI ArcGIS) and GPS (Trimble, PDA’s, ArcPad) systems.
6. Excellent communication, writing and organizational skills.
7. Valid New York State Driver License.
