Network Engineer -IP Planning South Africa , Constantia Park

Planning and design IP MPLS network infrastructure and solutions according to the needs and requirements of MTN Business objectives. •High and Low level design and analysis. •Network optimization •To ensure optimal use of existing and planned capacity, managing quality and security of the network and proactively monitoring and all aspects of the MTN Business core network.

KPA Duties

Operational effectiveness •Provide input into the forecasting and planning of budgets for the implementation of new solutions. •Monitor and report on variances, cost control and efficiencies relative to planned budgets. •Drive best practice, continuous improvement and innovation at process and procedure level whilst ensuring adherence to change control policies and procedures. •Verify that platform, features and functionality meet design objectives. •Assist with transmission planning. •Capacity planning. •Analyze traffic utilization data and/or forecast data to develop hardware and/or software requirements for equipment provisioning, service restoration network evolution or new, enhanced customer services. •Provide complete and accurate documentation of the MTN Business network. •Take actions to prevent the reoccurrence of problems, identifying external parties to assist with problem solving if required. •Consult to Solutions Consultants regarding the planning and design of effective solutions for customers, ensuring that the needs and requirements of the customer are taken into account and that solutions are aligned with the operational plans of the Technical team. •Providing input and recommendations into solutions for tenders. •Initiate and implement ideas and feedback on network tools, procedures and improvements to area functionality. •Assist with the operational establishment and development of new MTN networks in the international arena. •Provide constant status, feedback and progress reports on new build and solution delivery and support deliverables, reporting risk, change, status, decisions required, etc to stakeholders. •Ensure conformance to performance parameters and SLAs in all areas of planning, building and configuration of the MTN Business network. •Consider the 1-2 year implications of actions from a broad perspective and on the impact of solutions on other areas of the business, including interdependency aspects of the business. •Maintain continual focus on keeping technical solutions current, remaining aware of changing technologies and filtering information to the team, continually looking for ways to improve all aspects of technology development and service delivery. Customer relations •Establish sound relationships with all stakeholders. •Understand business needs and provide relevant input into the development / fine-tuning of systems accordingly. •Ensure that the business specifications are met and that the business is satisfied with solutions and service offerings at all times. •Establish and maintain quality standards that will enhance the customer experience and cost efficiency. •Consider the implications of actions to be taken for the customer and the effect on the customer, providing advice on the best approaches to reach the best results. General •Provide on-the-job training and guidance to new and replacement personnel. •Contribute towards continuous improvement and innovation at process and procedure level, providing input and recommendations into ways of fine tuning systems and processes in line with changing work practices. •Work consistently according to standard operating procedures.

Requirements

•Matric •Technical Degree/Qualification •Cisco Professional Certification (CCNP/CCIP) or Juniper Professional Certification (JNCIP) – working towards a CCIE or JNCIE
•At least 5 years engineering experience in IP/MPLS networking service provider arena. •Vendor management. •Specialisation in one of the major networking sectors •Experience in customer facing service/support in IP/MPLS networking space. •Project management experience •Leadership / management experience would be advantageous •Programming/Scripting (Perl) and database (MySQL/Postgres) would be advantageous.
•Excellent PC and computing skills. •Excellent troubleshooting ability •Presentation and Communication skills •Ability to work in high pace rapidly changing environment. •Ability to work in a structured and orderly fashion •Ability to ‘map’ new ideas onto existing products and/or be able to suggest product modification. •Ability to work within a team and across groups •Ability to bridge freely between different technologies, operating systems and applications required for the specific products •Relationship building skills •Ability to effectively match solutions to requirements
