Title: Research Associate, Energy and Environment

Salary: Mid thirties, based on education and experience

Founded in 1921, the Council on Foreign Relations is a leading nonprofit membership organization, research center, and publisher, with headquarters in New York, offices in Washington, D.C., and programs nationwide. It is dedicated to increasing America’s understanding of the world and contributing ideas to U.S. foreign policy. The Council’s 4300+ members are leaders in international affairs and foreign policy. The Council also publishes Foreign Affairs, the preeminent journal on global issues, and provides up-to-date information about the world and U.S. foreign policy on the Council’s award winning website, CFR.org.

The Council’s Studies Program is one of the country’s largest foreign policy think tanks with a widely respected and influential research staff. The Studies Program’s aim is to advance the discussion of American foreign policy and international affairs through its writing, publications, public outreach, and discussions.

The Research Associate will work under the direction of a fellow with a focus on climate change, strategic resource, and energy issues. The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Researching specific areas, finding articles, writing research briefs, and tracking news as requested by the Fellow
  • Assisting with fact-checking, proofreading and editing of blogs, op-eds, journal articles, and other written materials
  • Coordinating events, including sending invitations and managing RSVPs, corresponding with speakers and presiders, helping prepare background papers and materials for distribution, and providing other logistical support
  • Managing budgets, including preparing budgets and tracking monthly statements, monitoring grant information and writing reports and requests
  • Providing administrative support to the fellow, including scheduling, booking travel, handling correspondence, and responding to requests for information


Qualifications


Preferred Qualifications:

  • BA in International Relations, Political Science, Economics, or a related field, with high academic credentials. Candidates with a BA in a natural science and a strong background in international relations or political science will also be considered
  • Two-three years related administrative and/or internship experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfort with quantitative data essential; strong quantitative skills a plus
  • Strong research, proofreading, and editing skills
  • Strong organizational skills and multitasking skills with a keen attention to detail
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work calmly in a fast-paced environment
  • Background in U.S. foreign policy / climate change / energy strongly preferred. Interest in nuclear security also a plus
