Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking a Researcher for its Women’s Rights Division (“WRD”) to develop the division’s capacity to respond to crises, as well as provide enhanced support in priority areas of work. The position may be based in one of HRW’s offices in Africa, Europe or the US, preceded by a training period in HRW’s New York office.

Responsibilities:

1. Monitor and document women’s rights abuses during human rights crises including situations of armed conflict, massive civilian displacement or large scale killings, by collecting and analyzing information from a wide variety of sources including governments, local media, NGOs, journalists, diplomats, security forces and others in the field;

2. Conducting fact-finding missions;

3. Write and publicize reports, briefing papers, letters, news releases, op-eds, and submissions to national and international bodies on human rights concerns as needed in a concise and accurate manner, with a quick turnaround time;

4. Work extensively with the media to ensure widespread coverage of urgent women’s rights concerns and act as WRD’s most visible, front-line representative in a crisis as needed;

5. Develop and implement local, regional, and international strategies to change abusive laws, policies, and practices;

6. Respond promptly to queries from the media, public, and colleagues in the human rights community;

7. Present human rights concerns to government officials, opinion leaders, inter-governmental agencies, and the media;

8. Work closely with colleague non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and local human rights organizations to ensure that HRW’s work complements and enhances their own work;

9. Liaise effectively with HRW staff located in multiple locations throughout the world to ensure effective coordination and delivery of activities; and

10. Carry out any other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education: An advanced (graduate) degree in international relations, journalism, law, or social sciences.

Experience: Extensive experience conducting rigorous, careful human rights investigations and advocacy, including in crisis situations and ideally in multiple regionsis required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Strong research and documentation skills.

2. Ability to produce excellent written material under tight deadlines.

3. Ability to identify, research, analyze and effectively communicate important human rights developments in a timely and sophisticated fashion.

4. Ability to respond quickly to crises and conflicts as they may occur.

5. Knowledge of and experience working in international human rights and familiarity with international human rights law and women’s rights is required.

6. Ability to investigate and report on abuses of women’s rights without prejudice or favor, in contexts that are often highly charged politically.

7. Experience conducting face-to-face advocacy with high-level policymakers is highly desirable.

8. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; proficiency in Arabic or French is highly desirable.

9. Ability to think strategically about the global and local media environments and how to use the media and electronic media to further advocacy goals is strongly preferred.

10. Highly motivated, well-organized and capable of thinking creatively and strategically.

11. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with local partners, government officials and others.

Other: S/he must be willing to travel frequently and be prepared to spend extensive periods in the field.
